If it's been a few years since your last dental check-up, the idea of booking one can feel bigger than it should. Most of the anxiety comes from not knowing what's actually going to happen โ€” so here's the full sequence, in plain English.

1. The conversation, before the chair

Every check-up at Northvale Dental starts with a five-minute conversation. We want to know what's brought you in, how your mouth has felt over the last few months, whether anything specific is bothering you, and what your goals are. If you have dental anxiety, this is the moment to say so โ€” we adjust everything that follows.

This isn't a sales conversation. Nothing on your treatment plan gets decided here. The point is just so we know who you are and what you care about before we look inside your mouth.

2. The visual exam

Next, we look. A trained hygienist or dentist does a careful visual check of every surface of every tooth, plus your gums, tongue, palate, and the soft tissues at the back of your mouth. This part usually takes 5โ€“8 minutes and is completely painless.

We're checking for:

"The goal of a check-up isn't to find things to treat โ€” it's to confirm everything is fine, and to spot the small things before they become big ones."

3. Digital scans (the new X-ray)

If we haven't seen you in over a year, or if anything in the visual exam needs a closer look, we'll take a digital scan. Modern intraoral cameras and low-dose digital X-rays give us 15ร— the detail of older film, at a fraction of the radiation. The whole process takes 90 seconds and you'll see the images on the screen before we do.

4. The cleaning

The cleaning โ€” what dentists call a prophylaxis โ€” is usually the part patients remember most. Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gum line, polishes every tooth, and finishes with a fluoride treatment if you'd like one.

If you've had cleanings before, this will feel familiar. If you haven't had one in years, we slow the pace and check in frequently. There's no pain โ€” just some pressure and the occasional cold sensation.

5. The findings โ€” and the plan

At the end of the appointment, we sit down and walk through what we saw. If everything's fine, you'll hear that in plain language. If we found anything that needs attention, we'll show you on screen exactly what we're looking at, explain why we'd recommend treating it, and give you a written quote with fixed pricing.

You're never expected to book follow-up treatment on the same visit. We'd rather you go home, sit with it, and call us if you have questions.

6. What it costs

A standard check-up at Northvale Dental is $120. That includes the exam, the cleaning, the digital scan if needed, and the conversation. We bill insurance directly where possible.

The honest bit

Most check-ups are uneventful. The point is to keep it that way. Skipping appointments doesn't save money โ€” it usually costs more in the long run, because small problems become big ones when left alone. If you've been putting it off, that's normal. Book when you're ready and we'll take it from there.
