About Academy Kids Dental, Vision & Orthodontics

Academy Kids Dental, Vision & Orthodontics is a dental practice on South Academy Boulevard in the Southeast Colorado Springs area of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems using braces, clear aligners, or similar appliances over a period that commonly runs from about a year to several years depending on the case. It is offered to both children, where early evaluation can catch developing issues, and adults at any age.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not. I highly recommend this office! I had a great experience with getting vision exams for my brother and 1 yr old son. The entire team was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and the technicians that started the exam were kind, empathetic and great with children. The Dr was warm and inviting and very informative I’ll definitely be coming here from now on! Keep your crew they are the best!!

Overall I have had a great experience with Academy Kids! My daughter comes for ortho, dental and vision, and every visit in all departments, are treated with care and efficiency. Every time my daughter gets RayLynn in ortho, I have an even better experience! She is very thorough, informative, and patient. It is a great feeling being able to trust that my daughter is in good hands. Thanks so much for all you do!

My son has been going to this facility for 2 years now. From the start there has been numerous issues. One, the optician that did his eye exam was rude. No emotion, no empathy. Anytime I asked a question he seemed bothered. It was an uncomfortable experience. My son was fitted for glasses that were entirely too big for his face. He’s is 8 and these seemed like they were meant for a teenager. Two, the dental set up is anything but private. Expect your child to be in a line full of chairs with kids sitting next to them. No privacy, and all the parents sit in the same room. They do not wait until your child’s mouth is numb. My son is traumatized from his experience here. And I’m not sure who trains the front office people but they will call you continuously if you cancel an appointment. I don’t recommend receiving care here for your children. This has been a nightmare! We will be going elsewhere from now on. Comfort dental accepts Medicaid…. 😊

I rarely leave reviews, but the communication surrounding our recent appointment was frustrating. We arrived for our original appointment and were told it needed to be rescheduled. At that time, no one mentioned any insurance concerns or issues with our information. We were simply told the office would contact us to reschedule. After rescheduling, we received a call approximately two hours before the new appointment stating there might be an insurance issue. We explained the situation and were told we would be contacted if anything further was needed. Later, a voicemail was left saying the office could not verify the insurance because the wrong policy information had been used. My frustration is not with the insurance issue itself. These things happen. My frustration is that we had already appeared for the original appointment, no concerns were raised then, and the issue was not identified until the morning of the rescheduled appointment. As a parent managing a busy household, it is difficult to resolve insurance problems with only a couple hours’ notice. I understand mistakes happen, but earlier communication and verification would have saved everyone time and frustration.

We are a customer of Academy kids we love the experience that we wind up having with one of the representatives that actually do the dental work for the children and her name is Maya wanted to give the heads up on her she needs to be recognized and given a fat raise. she goes beyond to help the customer and to make sure that they're satisfaction are met as given what. We love her smile and we love her cheerfulness she's a keeper

It's always nice to go to a dentist that doesn't have to have me explain parts of my identity that aren't relevant to dentistry. Sometimes in this area it's hard, but this place always makes me feel safe, whether it's an appointment with my kid, or just calling to ask a question or get clarification from an expert. The front desk is always professional about any questions they do need to clarify from my end, and has been kind enough to check that their volume is tasteful when making sure sensetive information is correct. Thanks for providing our family with care we don't need to feel like our identities are roadbumps along!

Had an eye exam with Rachel and Kassandra and they were so amazing and thorough. Made the entire process fun and enjoyable. Will absolutely be back! Can’t recommend the vision department enough. Wanted to come and add that my child came in for a dental cleaning and my son had Neri as his assistant and she was very sweet and explained to my son how to practice safe and healthy dental care. Dr. Anne was very thorough and calmly explained to him how small tweaks can help so much! He left feeling happy and cared for! We use all three lines for both kiddos and have always loved our experiences all the way through.

I had previously been a satisfied patron of this dental practice, having visited for my own orthodontic treatment and routine check-ups. As a result, I thought it would be an excellent choice for my daughters' dental care. Nevertheless, after today's events, I will no longer be returning. My daughter's father was mistakenly accused of misgendering a receptionist when, in fact, he had not done so. When asked to confirm his relationship to our daughter, he replied in the affirmative without using a title, “yes I am” not “yes ma’am “ prompting the receptionist to insist that he use the title ‘it’s sir.' Our sole purpose for visiting the practice was for our daughter's dental examination, not to engage in a discussion about gender identity. I found the receptionist's behavior to be unprofessional and inappropriate, particularly given the forceful manner in which the correction was made. This practice is intended to provide a welcoming environment for children. I appreciate the manager calling me back and discussing this manner but I will not be returning.

Dr. Lyon and Kiwi (the whole vision team!!) are absolutely wonderful. They are super kinds and thoughtful with all my kids ages ranging from 2 years old to 17! Love How knowledgeable Dr. Elizabeth Lyon is and how she explains everything thoroughly; and her assistant Kiwi (like the fruit 🥝) is the sweetest, get all the kiddos comfortable for all of the pre-examination stuff and makes it fun for them. Thank you guys so much, we look forward to seeing you guys yearly!

I highly recommend Academy Kids Ortho Group, particularly because of Marianne Valenzuela. She is hands down the best ortho tech in the building. Marianne is efficient and quick. What truly sets her apart is how she works with kids. Watching her interact one-on-one with young patients is impressive—she asks thoughtful questions, engages them in conversation, and is incredibly gentle with children who may have anxiety or concerns. She knows exactly how to put kids at ease. Her professionalism and skill make her an exceptional asset to the practice. If you're looking for excellent orthodontic care for your child, you're in great hands with Marianne on the team!
