About Aesthetic & Family Dentistry of Washington

Aesthetic & Family Dentistry of Washington operates on Wisconsin Avenue in the Northwest Washington area of Washington, District of Columbia. A family dental practice sees a range of ages under one roof, which for most households means fewer separate appointments across different offices. It typically covers routine checkups and restorative treatment for both children and adults, with referrals out for anything requiring specialist training.

Affordable care means the practice sets out to make treatment accessible on a self-pay basis or through a payment arrangement, rather than assuming every patient arrives with comprehensive insurance. It is worth asking directly what options exist before assuming a needed treatment is out of reach.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. I respect Dr. Obholz’s work ethic. However, I have issue with the language barrier and perhaps cultural difference (she’s Russian) always present during dental visits. The doctor has very poor bedside — well, dental chair — manner. She doesn’t say anything beyond “hello, how are you?”… she doesn’t care about the answer because she doesn’t know how to make conversation to help ease the tension of being at the dentist’s. If I ask about a procedure to be done, she can be impatient and wouldn’t know how to explain in simple English. With a heavy hand, she just goes ahead with the job leaving me with a stressful and unpleasant experience.

Our family has been going here for 2 years now. They have delivered the best customer service in terms of scheduling, paperwork handling, and welcoming environment. Plus appointments start on time. And our kids and us have been very happy with the hygienists and dentists as well. They also have lots of insurance participations.

Excellent customer service and excellent care. The staff in the Aesthetic & Family Dentistry are great and kind people, I believe, based on my experience with them as their patient. Thanks,

10/10 experience! Madina was the first person I met and she was so welcoming. She gave me a tour of the office and made me feel comfortable right away. Wanique took my X-rays and was friendly, gentle, and professional. Maria cleaned my teeth and even though I needed to be numbed, I felt no pain at all. The entire team was amazing, I highly recommend this office!

I had such a great experience at this dental clinic! The whole vibe is super chill, which made me feel comfortable right away. Madina and Maria did an amazing job — they were both so friendly, professional, and really took their time to make sure everything was perfect. You can tell they genuinely care about their patients. Highly recommend if you’re looking for quality care in a relaxed environment!

Reception and booking v smooth. Dental work itself less impressive. Cleaning took a v long time (circa an hour). Lots of x-rays taken (more than anywhere else I've been). When I then saw a dentist for fillings they were splitting their time between me and at least one other patient. Since I've had increased sensitivity which I hoped would improve but hasn't. And I'm now getting calls about 'mandatory' cleaning. I've got a couple of colleagues who were also recommended this place and had similar experiences. One had to go back for a fix up and was treated dismissively by the dentist. Despite the fix up the problem remains. Not sure why the drop off; perhaps ownership has changed? Disappointing.

What a disappointing change a few years makes. Between my wife, my kids, and I we have over 60 years of relationship with Dr. Obholz’s practice. We have been through 10’s if not hundreds of hygienists and dentists. Through it all we were connected to the practice and even stayed on through a pay for service basis when I retired from work and lost dental coverage. We recently had a horrible experience that has caused us to change our dentist, moving from a 2 block walk to a 25 minute drive. As our dentist knows, both our kids struggle with autism. The last time one of them was there the dentist took almost 4 times to get her crown in. Not only was the experience awful and triggering to my daughter but he took a break to upsell whitening to a patient in the other bay. We have asked for 6 months to speak with Dr. Obholz simply to get an apology. She has ducked every chance to talk. To be clear, all we wanted was an admission of error and a commitment to do better. This never happened. We have since quit the practice and suggest that clients consider who they work with. There are many choices for dental service in the area. We chose someone else and are glad we did.

I decided to bring my daughters here from their previous office. We all had a wonderful experience. We were greeted kindly, got our teeth cleaned thoroughly, and given care plans for future appointments. I highly recommend this office for individuals and families!

I came to Aesthetic and Family Dentistry during the Covid pandemic as I could not access my regular dentist in another city. The care was fine, but the up-selling and surprise charges left me feeling ripped off and therefore I never returned. Despite providing my insurance information in advance, I was hit with a bill beyond what was estimated for a basic exam and cleaning. I'm an adult and was sold sealants by the hygienist, which unbeknownst to me I had to pay for fully out of pocket at $50 a pop. When I returned to my regular dentist, he snickered and said I'd been ripped off. I recall they also wanted to charge me $20 to clean my mouth guard -- something my regular dentist (in one of the most expensive locations in the country) does for free. It just didn't feel like an honest practice to me. UPDATE: Yes, I am a real (one-time) patient -- that's why I know exactly how much the practice charged for dental guard cleaning.
