About Affiliated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

Affiliated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons is a dental practice on West Thunderbird Road in Glendale, Arizona. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit. No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most of the swelling and discomfort settles within about a week, with the first two or three days the most noticeable. Surgical removal of an impacted tooth generally takes longer to recover from than a simple extraction.
Is it normal for teeth to be sensitive to cold?
Mild, brief sensitivity is common and often relates to exposed root surfaces or worn enamel. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold is removed is more significant and worth having examined, as it can indicate the nerve is involved.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dr. Nelson and his entire team provided exceptional care while removing my son and daughter’s wisdom teeth. From the moment we arrived, everyone was kind, professional, and focused on making the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. What impressed me most was how the staff handled a difficult customer situation during our visit. They remained calm, respectful, and extremely professional, ensuring the situation did not create additional anxiety for my children or myself. Their ability to maintain such a positive and caring environment under challenging circumstances speaks volumes about their character and commitment to patient care. We received truly 5-star treatment from start to finish. I highly recommend Dr. Nelson and his amazing staff to anyone looking for compassionate, professional, and outstanding dental care. Dr. Nelson is a very competent oral surgeon. He is very detail oriented and communicated really well to our family with instructions of before and after care for our mom. The office staff was comforting and had very good communication skills as well. We received all important information in writing and billing was straightforward with no surprises. Our family is forever grateful for the atmosphere and positive attitude at Peter Nelson’s office. He and his office function together well and we felt that every time we were there. His kindness and “can do” attitude was such a rare and welcome gift to us. He made a difficult and complicated procedure so much easier for our dear mom and us as a family. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Dr. Nelson and wonderful staff.

Dr Nelson and his staff are very caring. We’ve used this office for wisdom teeth and teeth extractions. Both went so well. He uses your own blood to speed up the healing process and it really works! Both of my kids procedures went amazingly and they healed so fast. Mostly I love that I trust Dr Nelson with both his professional opinions and ability in surgery. I was nervous but he explained everything thoroughly and answered all my questions. I will use him again and continue to recommend him to anyone who needs an oral surgeon.

Dr Nelson and staff were super friendly and put my son and me at ease. He had 4 teeth extracted they did a great job with him pre and post surgical. I would highly recommend them as a kid friendly oral surgeon. They do adults too. Bonus they have refreshments and comfortable waiting area while you wait.
