About Akron Periodontics & Dental Implantology

Gum specialists tend to meet patients at two particular moments: when a hygienist finally says the pockets are deeper than cleaning alone can manage, and when a tooth has been lost and something needs to fill the gap. That is the flow into this Fairlawn practice, where Dr. Mark S. Obernesser, DDS, MMSc and Dr. Khawla Aljohani, DDS, MSD work as periodontists, handling the cases Summit County general dentists send out rather than treat in their own chairs. The scope is deliberately narrow — scaling and root planing, surgical and non-surgical gum disease treatment, gum grafting, crown lengthening, bone grafting and implant placement. Your own dentist keeps the fillings, crowns and cleanings.

Gum grafting is the procedure most people arrive knowing least about. Recession exposes the root surface, which has no enamel, so it is softer, more sensitive to cold and far more prone to decay than the crown of the tooth; left alone, it keeps creeping. A graft rebuilds that missing tissue. Traditionally, a thin layer of connective tissue is taken from beneath the surface of your palate and tucked under the gum at the recession site, where it takes on a new blood supply over the following weeks. Donor tissue can be used instead when several teeth need covering and taking that much from the palate would be unpleasant. Stitches come out around ten days later, the graft blends in over a few months, and the root is protected again. Recovery mostly means soft food and leaving the site alone — no brushing across it until you are told otherwise.

The office is in Suite 200 at 484 South Miller Road, just off the West Market Street corridor in Fairlawn near Summit Mall, easily reached from Bath, Copley, Montrose and West Akron.

Be realistic about what treatment achieves. Periodontal disease is controlled rather than cured, and bone already lost does not regenerate on its own; the goal is to halt progression and keep teeth. That means maintenance cleanings every three or four months, usually alternating between here and your general dentist. Hours are Monday through Thursday, closing at half past four and earlier on Thursday, with no Friday or weekend cover.

A specialist periodontal and implant practice in Suite 200 at 484 South Miller Road in Fairlawn, staffed by Dr. Mark S. Obernesser, DDS, MMSc and Dr. Khawla Aljohani, DDS, MSD. Work is referral-led and narrowly focused: scaling and root planing, surgical and non-surgical gum disease treatment, gum grafting, crown lengthening, bone grafting and implant placement, with your own dentist retaining restorative care. Periodontal disease is managed long term through three or four monthly maintenance visits. Monday to Thursday only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a periodontist do that my regular dentist does not?
A periodontist completes several years of additional training after dental school, focused entirely on the gum and bone supporting the teeth, plus implant surgery. General dentists handle early gum inflammation routinely. Referral happens when pockets stay deep despite cleaning, when bone loss is advancing, when recession needs grafting, or when an implant site requires bone reconstruction. You keep your own dentist for fillings, crowns and regular examinations throughout.
How long does recovery from a gum graft take?
The first week is the awkward part, particularly if tissue was taken from your palate, which feels like a burn while it heals. Stick to soft, cool food and do not brush across the graft until instructed. Stitches usually come out around ten days. The tissue keeps maturing and blending in colour for two to three months, so judging the final appearance in the first fortnight is premature.
Will I still need to visit this office after treatment is finished?
Almost certainly. Periodontal disease is controlled rather than eliminated, and pockets can deepen again if maintenance lapses. Most patients settle into cleanings every three to four months, frequently alternating between this office and their general dentist so both track the tissue over time. Bone already lost does not grow back by itself, so the honest goal is halting progression and keeping the teeth you have.

Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable. I was nervous about going in, but was quickly put at ease at the reception desk and that feeling lasted through my entire appointment. Ease a good care. Great combo.

My experience was excellent. The staff is professional, pleasant, friendly, and helpful. Dr. Aljohani is an outstanding periodontist. She puts her patients at ease, is very knowledgeable, thorough and caring. She makes you feel that your concerns matter to her and that you are a valued patient. She goes above and beyond to take care of her patients. In addition, Dr. Aljohani has assembled a wonderful staff. Her dental hygienist, Breanna Welsh is hands down the most skilled, knowledgeable and caring hygienist I’ve ever had. I strongly recommend Dr. Aljohani and Akron Periodontics to anyone.

As someone with a lot of anxiety around dental procedures, I chose to have IV sedation for my procedure. Everything went as expected, I was unconscious though the whole procedure and I don't remember anything. I had little pain (three Motrin took care of it) and no bleeding. The procedure was yesterday, and I now have no pain at all. I don't even feel like I had anything done. It's incredible! Dr. K is the best! She is an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT! A++++ would 100% recommend!

Where to begin? From the moment I walked in for my first appointment with severe anxiety, I was treated with kindness, patience, and understanding. Dr. K and her staff went above and beyond and restored my faith that there are true health care professionals that care about their patients. I am 100% confident in this team. I am looking forward to finishing my treatment with this amazing crew. From reception, billing, and periodontal implant care, I would not hesitate to recommend them.
