About Alamo Heights Dental -- a DeKoch Family Practice

Alamo Heights Dental -- a DeKoch Family Practice provides dental care on Chichester Place in the Uptown Central area of San Antonio, Texas. A professional cleaning removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing and flossing cannot reach, particularly along the gumline, and is the core of routine preventive care. Most people benefit from a cleaning roughly every six months, more often for those managing gum disease.

Affordable care means the practice sets out to make treatment accessible on a self-pay basis or through a payment arrangement, rather than assuming every patient arrives with comprehensive insurance. It is worth asking directly what options exist before assuming a needed treatment is out of reach.

At the core of a general dental practice is preventive and restorative care: checkups, professional cleanings, fillings, and screening for decay and gum disease before either becomes a bigger problem. It is the kind of appointment most people need on a routine schedule rather than only when something hurts.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts. I had my first visit about a month or two ago. The staff was friendly and the appointment went just fine. I had went in for a cleaning and x-rays. I was told that my insurance covered two cleanings per year. Then to my surprise I get a bill in the mail. I called and asked why because I thought it was covered. I was told the insurance covers panoramic x-rays only every 5 years. I told her the responsible thing to have done would've been to let me know about it so I could've contacted my previous dental office to get it. She gave an unapologetic apology. That was the end of my conversation with the brick wall and I paid it.

This family of dentists are excellent. They have gone above and beyond to help me and my husband with dental work. They are the nicest of people. They have done such good work and pride themselves on their work. If something is not right, they make it right. The entire staff is so lovely and kind. You cannot find another dentist office in town like them!!

June 2025 I've been back to visit this dental practice a couple of times this year. Once earlier for a cleaning, which went really well, and one for a follow-up from a dental accident that required some extensive work. In both cases, the staff at the front desk, and the assistants or hygienist were fantastic, professional and customer oriented. Finally, I cannot say enough about how good the doctors are in this family owned practice. Parking is plentiful and if I had to make one recommendation it would be to confirm your insurance is accepted. October 2024 I visited this dental practice yesterday, 10/15, for a standard dental procedure. This is a family owned and run practice located near the Broadway & Austin Highway intersection. They are friendly, professional, customer service oriented, and use current technology to handle any of your dental needs. From the time I arrived and was greeted, checked in, then taken back for x-rays, and then had my cleaning by the hygienist, Krista, all aspects were great. I can't say enough good accolades about this practice. Please be sure to validate that your insurance is accepted by the group. I hope you choose to use them and that your experience is as good as mine.

I went to AHD for my entire childhood and most of my adult life. I moved to New England 4 years ago, and boy did I take this place for granted. Both DeKoch’s are amazing, the hygienists are top notch, and the front office are PROS. It doesn’t get any better than Alamo Heights Dental.

All professional staff is great at Alamo Heights Dental. I am big on service though - there is one individual that answers calls that has been rude/sharp with me on more than one occasion. Again, the DeKoch family and the nursing staff are amazing.
