About Alpha Dental Akron

Down at the Portage Lakes end of Manchester Road, the patient list looks the way a neighbourhood practice's list usually does: families booking two or three appointments back to back, retirees from Coventry Township and New Franklin, and a steady flow of people who need a tooth out and would rather not be awake for it. Alpha Dental's Akron office, led by Dr. Gregg Mendel, an Ohio State College of Dentistry graduate, covers cleanings, whitening, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, dentures and implants — but the surgical side is what gets the most emphasis, particularly extractions and wisdom teeth.

Take a lower wisdom tooth as an example of how that runs. An X-ray first establishes how the root sits relative to the nerve canal that runs through the lower jaw, because that geometry decides everything that follows. On the day, you are numbed locally, or sedated if you have chosen that route; the gum is opened, a little bone is trimmed if the tooth is trapped beneath it, and the crown is often sectioned into pieces so it can be lifted out through a smaller opening rather than forced whole. The socket is irrigated, stitches go in, and you bite on gauze until clotting settles. Swelling peaks on the second or third day, not the first, which surprises people. The one complication worth knowing about is dry socket — a lost clot leaving bone exposed, usually around day three, and far more likely if you smoke or use a straw during the first week.

Sedation dentistry and intravenous sedation are both offered, which is the reason a fair number of patients travel here rather than to a closer office. Staff have Spanish available, and financing runs through CareCredit and Healthcare Finance Direct.

Two practical caveats. The office accepts most managed care plans but specifically does not participate with Humana Horizons, AmeriHealth or Aetna Better Health, so confirm your plan before you make the trip. And hours are weekdays only, finishing at half past four Monday through Thursday and half past two on Friday — there is no evening or Saturday cover.

Most managed care plans are accepted, though Humana Horizons, AmeriHealth and Aetna Better Health are not. Weekday hours only, closing mid-afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sedation options does the Akron office actually offer?
Two routes are listed: sedation dentistry using medication that leaves you drowsy but responsive, and intravenous sedation, which is deeper and typically leaves little or no memory of the procedure. Intravenous sedation requires fasting beforehand and a responsible adult to drive you home afterwards. Which one suits you depends on the procedure length, your medical history and your medications, so raise it at the consultation rather than on the day.
Which insurance plans are not accepted here?
The practice accepts most managed care plans but states that it does not participate with Humana Horizons, AmeriHealth or Aetna Better Health. If you are covered by one of those, verify before booking rather than after arriving. For patients without coverage, or those facing a larger surgical or implant plan, the office works with CareCredit and Healthcare Finance Direct, both of which spread treatment costs over monthly instalments.
How long does recovery from a wisdom tooth extraction take?
Most people take it easy for two to three days. Swelling peaks on day two or three rather than immediately, and bruising along the jawline is normal. Soft food, cold compresses on the first day and gentle salt-water rinsing from day two cover most of it. Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw for at least a week, since the suction can dislodge the clot and cause a painful dry socket.

Oral surgeon is incompetent and cannot do anything more complex than a pulling an average tooth. I am in pain every single day and they simply do not care. Edit to add yes I did come get xrays, my Google name is not what you have on file. I didn't even get to speak to the doctor myself, my appointment was canceled, and my operation deemed too complicated. What is the point of being an oral surgeon????

Such an inconsiderate office! We provided the insurance card when the appointment was booked. They waited 2 months to inform us that they didn't accept our type of Anthem insurance. That was 2 months of waiting in pain for a tooth extraction. Now we have to start all over to find a provider and wait again for relief.

My review seems to have disappeared so let's do this again. My fiancé came here and had a tooth pulled. They wanted to pull several others but he wanted a 2nd opinion. We got our 2nd opinion and they suggested the teeth weren't restorable, but this dentist didn't pull teeth so they sent us back to Alpha Dental. They refused to see him again because apparently, we hurt their feelings when we wanted a 2nd opinion. So we finally managed to find another dentist that takes his insurance. We saw them today and they took new xrays and they said the teeth are restorable and started the process of doing that today. Imagine that. Don't take Alpha Dentals word if they say your teeth are not restorable and need pulled. That may not be the case. They dont care about saving teeth. I wish I could give them zero stars. Good riddance. We will never be back and we will tell everyone we know to beware of Alpha Dental.

I love Alpha Dental. Everyone in the office is so welcoming, helpful, and professional. The dentist takes his time, explains everything, and make sure you're comfortable from start to finish. They've earned my trust completely. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

So my fiancé had a tooth pulled here. They dont allow anyone to go back with the patient. He has anxiety and did not understand that some of his teeth are not restorative. So they sent him to a different dentist and they were kind enough to explain to me, what was going on with him. So the dentist we went to does not do extractions so they sent us back to Alpha Dental. I called and left a message and they never called back. So I showed up there today and now they are refusing to do anymore extractions on him. They would not explain why, only said it varies by case. And as soon as she looked his name up, she immediately started saying something about not seeing him again then said she had to talk to her boss. So their refusal to see him must be because they are butt hurt that he wanted a 2nd opinion since they already pulled one of his teeth successfully. So this decision has also earned them a 1 star since they dont want to explain anything to us. So thanks for nothing, rest assured we will find a dentist, one that actually calls people back. Your star rating is going down and will continue to go down as you are very unprofessional.

I recommend this Dental Office to everyone! I went in for my first visit about a week ago. The atmosphere was peaceful and office was clean and in order. The music playing was inspirational and the whole office was decorated with encouraging words. The front desk staff were very professional and kind. They made me feel comfortable and they cared. The assistants were professional and kind as well, they made me feel as if we knew each other for a long time. I appreciate the whole staff taking the time to listen and answering all my questions. I went in today to have my tooth pulled and OMG, Dr. Mendel was amazing! He was very professional and kind. He is very knowledgeable in his profession and made me feel very comfortable with having my tooth pulled. He came in the room and did a great job pulling my tooth out, he was quick and the procedure was not painful. I am so grateful for everyone in this office and I pray many blessings over the staff and their families. This office has the right ones in the right position, I will definitely recommend all my family and friends to this office.

I was referred to Alpha Dental from my regular dentist to have a crown done. From my initial phone call with Melaina, then meeting Dr. Mendel & Megan, all I can say about the entire staff is nothing but outstanding service from start to finish. They were very informative about my procedure, very professional, friendly & courteous. And very prompt service as well... from the time I walked into the office, I was in the dental chair within 5 minutes every time, no waiting. I highly recommend them. Many thanks to Megan, Melaina & Dr. Mendel for your exceptional care!
