Community dental care on the Lower East Side

Betances Health Center is a community health facility located on Henry Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York. As part of a federally qualified health center network, Betances provides a broad range of primary care services to neighborhood residents, including general dentistry for eligible patients in the community.
The dental services offered at Betances are integrated into a multi-disciplinary primary care model. General dentistry at the facility covers routine examinations, professional cleanings, and basic restorative dental care. Patients who already receive primary medical care at Betances may be able to coordinate dental and medical appointments during the same visit to the facility, reducing the number of separate trips required for comprehensive health maintenance.
Community health centers such as Betances typically operate on a sliding-scale fee structure for uninsured and underinsured patients, meaning the cost of care is adjusted based on household income. This structure makes dental care significantly more accessible for Lower East Side residents who lack employer-sponsored dental coverage or who are ineligible for Medicaid dental benefits. Patients should ask about the sliding-scale fee schedule and eligibility requirements directly when calling to schedule a dental appointment.
The dental providers at Betances work alongside the facility’s broader clinical team, which includes nurse practitioners, medical providers, and support staff. Appointment availability for dental visits may vary depending on the schedule and staffing on a given day; calling ahead to confirm dental scheduling, and to communicate the nature of the visit, is advisable for patients with specific dental needs beyond a general examination.
Henry Street in the Lower East Side runs through one of Manhattan’s most historically dense and culturally diverse neighborhoods, adjacent to Chinatown, the Two Bridges area, and the East Village. The facility is accessible by several bus routes and is within reach of the Grand Street, Delancey Street — Essex Street, and East Broadway subway stations. Patients from across lower Manhattan, including nearby neighborhoods in Brooklyn across the Manhattan Bridge, can reach the center without significant transit time.
Patients on the Lower East Side or nearby areas who are looking for community-based dental care — particularly those without private dental insurance — can contact Betances Health Center at the number listed on this page to inquire about dental appointment availability, accepted insurance and Medicaid plans, and sliding-scale fee eligibility.

I came into this office after being referred by my PCP for medication management and was scheduled to see NP Fahad Sultan. Unfortunately, my experience with him was extremely negative. He was rude, dismissive, and made several microaggressions that made me very uncomfortable. For example, when I disclosed that I work as an ABA therapist and that my sister has Autism, he responded, “Well now you can help your sister, haha kidding.” This was highly unprofessional and inappropriate. I came prepared with my medical records and neuropsych evaluation, which I offered to email him, and he initially said it was important to review. However, after a 35-minute questionnaire, he dismissed my existing diagnosis of four years, despite the fact that I have been receiving consistent treatment for it. No screening assessments were completed; this was just a basic intake, yet he was making assumptions and decisions about my mental health as if he had enough information to invalidate my history. When I expressed concern about this and about the length of the appointment, he tried to argue that it was 51 minutes long, even though we started at 2:15 and I left at 2:51. This felt dishonest and further eroded my trust. I left the appointment feeling very emotional and unheard. The only positive part of this visit was the front desk staff, who were kind, understanding, and empathetic. For their professionalism, I am giving this office one star. I strongly recommend that this provider take cultural competence training and social skills training, and that he begin requesting and reviewing medical records prior to initial appointments. Overall, I found him to be incompetent, invalidating, and lacking the professionalism necessary for patient care.
I came in feeling unwell. Although there was no doctor available, the nurse saw me and was highly professional, attentive, and thorough in her care. Everyone was kind, down-to-earth, and genuinely caring.
They have a very friendly staff, very knowledgeable and they make you feel that you are a part of your care and that is important
