About Birmingham Dental
Birmingham Dental runs a Five Points South practice on 19th Street South, in the historic urban district just east of the UAB campus where the residential blocks mix with student housing, restaurants, and the medical-center corridor. The practice handles general dentistry for the surrounding Five Points, UAB, and Highland Park community — students, working professionals, longtime urban-core residents, and the medical-corridor employees who live nearby.
Routine fillings make up a regular share of the schedule. The team uses tooth-colored composite as the default for most cases, handling single-surface fillings for early-stage decay, multi-surface restorations on larger cases, replacement work when older fillings have failed, and the structural call between filling and crown when more tooth material has been lost. Beyond fillings, services include cleanings and exams, root canals, crowns and bridges, extractions, gum-disease screening, teeth whitening, and emergency dental care. They'll show the cavity on the intraoral camera before treatment so the recommendation feels grounded in what you can see.
If you work or live near UAB and you've been driving across the city for the dentist, a closer Five Points practice can cut the round-trip time and make six-month recalls easier to keep on the schedule.
Patients searching for dentist for whole family in Birmingham, family dentist in Birmingham, or general dentistry in Birmingham, AL who live in Five Points South, Highland Park, or downtown often weigh practices like this one for the proximity and the routine general-dentistry focus. Birmingham Dental fits that pattern. The new-patient exam combines comprehensive radiographs, periodontal screening, and a treatment-plan review before any restorative work is scheduled. For Five Points and UAB-adjacent residents picking a regular general dental practice, this 19th Street South office is a reasonable first appointment. Insurance acceptance, hours, and current new-patient availability shift across the year, so a phone call before booking is the most reliable way to confirm what's in-network and which slots open up this week. If you've had recent medical changes — new medications, recent surgery, ongoing conditions — flagging them at intake matters more than patients usually expect, since several common drugs interact with routine dental work.

My experience here was great ! The service here is really fantastic definitely recommend coming here! The staff are amazing people. Especially my hygienist who cleaned my teeth Marlyn
I had not been to a dentist in 2 and 1/2 years, and I knew that I needed to visit and know the state of my mouth. Previously, I had insurance issues when I was on Medicaid with my old office, and so my mom and I never got around to finding another office. At the start of the year, I decided to enroll myself in dental insurance, and one of my covered providers was Dr. Carson Freeman. Dr. Freeman graduated from the UAB School of Dentistry a few years ago, and as a UAB undergraduate that was appealing to me. He also had good reviews, so I decided to schedule an appointment with him. I emailed Birmingham Dental to make my appointment, and the process was very straightforward. Even though I had been flossing pretty much daily for 1 and 1/2 years, I was still a bit anxious to know how healthy my mouth was. When I was called back for my appointment, they took all the X-rays that are standard for new patients. Then, the hygienist took a look at my gum pockets, and my gums were healthy! I had a majority of 1s and 2s, with a couple 3s in there. The hygienist informed me that 3s were concerning but not bad. After talking to two dentists that I know that live in TN and FL, they say 3s are healthy, and 4s start meaning periodontal disease. I don't know why she was telling me to be concerned about the 3mm pockets because I have never had anyone I know in the dental field or at any appointment say 3mm pockets are to be watched. Lastly, she did my prophylaxis, which was good. Afterwards, Dr. Carson came in, and he introduced himself. We had a bit of small talk, so he could get to know me. I appreciated it, as he wanted to build rapport and establish trust. Then, he did a comprehensive exam, and he let me know that I do have a small cavity on 13, but overall, my teeth were in good condition. He also informed me that I only have two wisdom teeth (1 and 16), which were both impacted, and they needed to be extracted. I had many questions for him, and he took his time to answer them, even with a patient waiting on him in another room. I felt comfortable with him the whole time, and I want him to be the one that does all my procedures and exams in the future. You can tell he's a dentist that cares for his patients and wants them to be informed on their health, which I admire. Overall, I strongly recommend Dr. Carson Freeman. He's a great doctor that really cares about his patients and enjoys his job. I look forward to getting my cavity filled, which is kinda crazy to say.
I've had A LOT of work done here over the past year and dr.freeman is phenomenal. This will be my dentist for life!! Daisy is amazing definitely if you are looking for a new dentist that makes you feel safe and comfortable and pays very close attention to your needs, THIS is the place. Scheduling is phenomenal, these people are so sweet and always calls/txts to check on me!
I've been at this dentist for over 10 years and I really like it. The dentist take their time to explain things and simple ways you can improve your health (flossing correctly is more complicated than it seems). Also all the hygienists are great!
Melinda is so sweet and personable. I go here for teeth cleaning and I never feel any pain at when they have to scrape my teeth. They have always been so kind. Dr. Freeman is very kind as well. I would recommend this practice to anyone.
First trip to this location and it was a great experience for sure. Dr. Cramer and Dr. Freeman really take care of their patients. I met Lillian today and she was great. She made my experience quick and easy!
