About Cannon Park Dental - Dr. James Myers

Cannon Park is the small green square on the upper west side of the peninsula where the old Charleston Museum stood until it burned in 1981; the surviving columns still ring the lawn. Ashley Avenue runs past it, through Harleston Village and down into the medical district, which puts this office within walking distance of MUSC, Roper Hospital and a good part of the College of Charleston. On a peninsula where parking often decides whether an appointment is worth keeping, the practice's off-street parking is not a small detail.

Dr. Jay Myers works in metal-free ceramics. Crowns and bridges here are built without a metal substructure, which removes the grey line that eventually shows at the gum margin of an older porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and lets light pass through the restoration much as it does through enamel. CEREC in the office means a crown can be scanned, designed, milled and seated in a single visit, with no temporary and no second injection a fortnight later. Ceramic reconstruction, where several worn or broken teeth are rebuilt as one planned case rather than patched one at a time, is the practice's stated specialty.

The hygiene side is treated as more than a polish. The office claims outright that you will not find a more thorough cleaning or oral hygiene education experience in Charleston, which is a large claim but a clear signal of where the time goes in a routine visit. The team is small enough to know you: Justine Gardiner handles hygiene, Beth Richards assists chairside, and Linda Stewart runs the front desk and insurance, so you speak to the same person about your benefits each time rather than a rotating call centre.

Comfort measures are practical rather than showy, with a painless injection system for delivering local anaesthetic and nitrous oxide sedation for patients who need it. Same-day emergency treatment is offered, which is useful in a neighbourhood full of students and hospital staff who cannot plan around a fractured tooth. Children are seen alongside adults of every age, and the restorative range covers root canals, extractions, dentures and partials, and implant restoration, with most insurances accepted and financing available.

A small downtown practice on Ashley Avenue beside Cannon Park, walkable from MUSC, Roper Hospital and the College of Charleston, with off-street parking that is rare on the peninsula. Metal-free ceramic crowns and bridges, CEREC single-visit restorations and planned ceramic reconstruction are the clinical focus, alongside an unusually thorough hygiene visit, nitrous oxide sedation and same-day emergency treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there parking near the Ashley Avenue office?
Yes, and on the peninsula that is often the deciding factor. The practice has off-street parking, so you are not feeding a meter in Harleston Village or circling blocks near the medical district before an appointment. The location on Ashley Avenue beside Cannon Park is also walkable from MUSC, Roper Hospital and much of the College of Charleston, which suits students and hospital staff fitting a visit between shifts.
What are metal-free crowns, and are they as strong as the older kind?
A traditional crown has a metal core beneath porcelain, which is strong but eventually shows as a dark line at the gum margin and blocks light passing through. All-ceramic crowns have no metal core, so they transmit light more like natural enamel. Modern ceramics such as zirconia and lithium disilicate are strong enough for most positions, molars included. The right material depends on how much clearance and sound tooth structure you have.
How long does a routine cleaning take here?
Longer than you may be used to. The office states plainly that you will not find a more thorough cleaning or oral hygiene education experience in Charleston, and the routine visit is built around that promise: scaling, polishing and a genuine conversation about technique rather than a rushed pass with a scaler. Hygiene is handled by a dedicated hygienist, with examination, radiographs when due and any treatment planning following on.

Excellent experience. Sara (hygienist) is a pro. Skilled, and a lovely person as well. Dr. Myers and his team are outstanding. (November 2022). I said the above four years ago and the only change I would make is that my hygienist today was Kelly. Also excellent!!

My dental technician was very patient with me. I have anxiety when it comes to dental work and a very sensitive gag reflex. She was gentle and made me feel comfortable. Glad I’ve become a patient at Cannon Park Dental. Also there was no wait time when I arrived to my appointment.

Everyone at Cannon Park Dental is absolutely amazing! As someone with major dental anxiety who avoided the dentist for nearly three years because of it, I was incredibly nervous about coming back. From my very first phone call through the end of my appointment, every single person treated me with kindness, patience, and genuine care. They made me feel comfortable immediately, explained everything clearly, and never made me feel judged. My anxiety melted away so much faster than I expected, and for the first time in a long time, I actually left a dental appointment feeling relieved and excited to come back. I’m so grateful I found Cannon Park Dental—they’ve officially become the first dentist office I won’t ghost! 😂 I can’t recommend them enough and will absolutely be sending all my friends and family their way.

I was given Jay's name from Friends because my last two dentists are retired. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences so far. He replaced a crown for me, which was impressive because he makes the crown right there in the office so it was a one time visit. His staff is the best. They treat me like family and it's not because we have the same last name.

Our visit to Cannon Park Dental to see Dr James Myers and his team was EXCELLENT! The office and its staff are warm and welcoming. Dr Myers cared for my son after a dental emergency and we were very pleased with his care!

Dr. Myers and his team are truly wonderful. Dr. Myers treated my seven year old’s cavity, which had originally been done by an out of state dentist and he was incredibly gentle with him. We are absolutely thrilled to have found his office. It’s very convenient, and ample street parking is an added bonus. We couldn’t be happier with the care we received.
