About Carl McMillan, DMD, PA: Holistic Dental Centers

Carl McMillan, DMD, PA: Holistic Dental Centers provides dental care on Torrence Chapel Road in Cornelius, North Carolina. Holistic, or biological, dentistry applies standard dental diagnosis and treatment within an approach that emphasises material choice and conservative treatment, considering oral health as connected to the body more broadly rather than treating the mouth in isolation.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not. We were scheduled to see this dentist but when I asked the receptionist about the policy about parents staying with children, Bonnie clearly stated that parents are not allowed back with their child during procedures. When I asked why, she said that kids are usually better behaved when the parent is not with them. I’m not comfortable with that at all so we cancelled our appointment. Just good to know before you spend hundreds on an evaluation.

I have seen and liked Dr. McMillian, but he is hard to get into. I took my children to see Dr. Crestbow. We started the MyoBrace at his advice and spent a lot of money with no results. He was not professional about our concerns.

Dr McMillan and staff had a lot of work to do with me, as my amalgams were seriously affecting my health, and I had many of them. They were very kind, professional and knowledgeable. Dr McMillan was very concerned with my comfort the whole time. This was the absolute best dentist I've ever been to. I am thankful I was able to go to him.

If you're looking for a truly extraordinary pediatric dentist, Dr. Crespo is the only one I can confidently recommend. Up to date on the holistic approach with a phenomenal reputation. Having numerous dental traumas in my past, it was vitally important to find a practitioner who could create the the best start for our child's dental relationship. Dr. Crespo handled our daughter's first repair procedure with such care. I was initially uncomfortable, allowing her to go into the procedure room without me; but their frequent updates & consideration put me at ease. My daughter didn't have any trepidation and has asked when she'll be able to go again... Isabel now has a positive memory and level of trust with her dentist that is priceless. We will be taking all our children, as needed to Dr. Crespo.
