About Carolina Restorative & Implant Dentistry

Forest Acres keeps its own rhythm a few minutes northeast of downtown Columbia, and 4019 Forest Drive puts Carolina Restorative & Implant Dentistry in the middle of it, among the shops and offices along that stretch. This is a prosthodontic practice, the first one to open in Columbia, and it has served the Midlands for more than thirty years. Dr. Robert Holland earned his dental degree at the Medical University of South Carolina and completed graduate training in prosthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry, with over twenty years of clinical work behind him.

Full mouth rehabilitation is the discipline the office is organized around, and it is a different exercise from fixing teeth one at a time. When years of wear, grinding, old crowns and lost molars have collapsed the height of the bite, the jaw closes further than it should and the whole system compensates: chipped edges, sore muscles, teeth that keep fracturing. Rehabilitation re-establishes that vertical dimension deliberately. The target bite is designed first, tested in provisional restorations you actually wear and chew on, and only then reproduced in the final crowns, bridges and implant work. It is slow by nature, and the provisional stage is not a delay but the part that proves the plan.

Implants sit inside that framework rather than beside it. A titanium post replaces the root, bone grows against its surface over several months, and the crown, bridge or hybrid prosthesis on top is designed so the chewing forces land where the bone can carry them. Hybrid prostheses, which are fixed full arches screwed onto implants, sit alongside complete dentures, partial dentures, crowns and bridges on the treatment list.

Two practical notes before you call. Complex restorative work is quoted case by case, because the number of teeth involved and the condition of the bone and gums change the figure substantially; expect an examination and records before any number is meaningful. And the office runs Monday through Thursday and is closed on Fridays, so appointments book into a four-day week and long treatment sequences stretch accordingly.

Carolina Restorative & Implant Dentistry has worked from Forest Drive in Forest Acres for more than thirty years and was the first prosthodontic office in Columbia. Dr. Robert Holland trained in prosthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry after dental school at MUSC. The practice concentrates on full mouth rehabilitation, dental implants, hybrid prostheses, crowns, bridges, complete dentures and partials, using provisional restorations to test a new bite before it is made final. Closed Fridays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a prosthodontist do that a general dentist does not?
Prosthodontics is a recognized dental specialty focused on replacing and restoring teeth: crowns, bridges, dentures, implant restorations and full mouth rehabilitation. It requires several years of additional hospital-based training after dental school, concentrated on how a reconstructed bite functions and holds up under load. Dr. Holland completed that training at Baylor College of Dentistry. For a single filling a general dentist is the right person; for a whole-mouth rebuild, the extra training shows.
Why do I need temporary teeth before the final ones?
In a full mouth rehabilitation the height of your bite is being deliberately changed, and no one can predict on paper exactly how your muscles and joints will respond. Provisional restorations let you eat, speak and sleep in the proposed new bite for weeks, so any problem surfaces while adjustments are still easy and inexpensive. Once the provisional design is comfortable, it becomes the blueprint the laboratory copies into the final restorations.
What is a hybrid prosthesis?
A hybrid is a full arch of fixed teeth screwed onto four or more implants, rather than resting on the gums the way a denture does. Because it is fixed, it does not come out at night and does not depend on suction or adhesive. You clean around and under it with floss threaders and a water flosser, and it is removed only by the dentist for periodic maintenance and inspection of the implants.

Overall, I am very pleased with the service I received at Dr. Holland’s office. My first encounter was with Colleen, the treatment planner. She has a wonderful, caring personality and has the ability to put patients at ease. Next was Dr. Holland’s thorough exam. He provided an explanation of his findings and is working on a treatment plan. My next encounter was with Sophie, the front desk coordinator, who was very helpful with coordinating my next appointment. We also connected via our love of dogs. All in all, what could have been a depressing appointment due to the complexity of the treatment required, was made so much more pleasant by the professionals in this office.
