About Charleston Family Dentistry

Most of what happens at 2170 Savannah Highway is unremarkable, and that is exactly the point. A cleaning, a pair of bitewing X-rays, a filling swapped out before it cracks, a night guard for someone who has been grinding through a stressful year — routine care delivered on schedule is what keeps the expensive appointments off your calendar. Charleston Family Dentistry presents itself as a neighborhood practice on this West Ashley stretch of Highway 17, and its own site traces the office back roughly fifty years, with Dr. Keith Kirkland and Dr. Barrows treating patients today. The week runs Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.

The general-versus-specialist question comes up here the way it does at any full-service family office. A general dentist covers a great deal of ground: crowns, dentures, root canal treatment on straightforward teeth, and the restorative half of an implant, meaning the abutment and the crown that fastens onto it. What usually gets handed off is the surgical half. A molar canal that is calcified or sharply curved is often faster and more predictable in an endodontist's chair, and seating the titanium fixture into bone is oral surgery. The practice does list same-day crowns, which matters in a practical way: a crown milled and cemented in one sitting removes the temporary, the second appointment, and the two weeks of chewing carefully on a provisional.

Urgent problems get room too — a broken cusp, a filling that came out in a bagel, swelling that appeared overnight — which is useful to know before the day you need it. On cost, the office states that it accepts most major dental insurance and offers reductions for patients paying out of pocket, including seniors and veterans, plus an introductory rate for new-patient exams. Confirm what those cover before assuming; discount structures rarely apply evenly across every procedure.

Geographically this is a West Ashley office in the 29414 band, west of the Ashley River and convenient to the neighborhoods on either side of Highway 17. It works well for Johns Island and Ravenel drivers already heading toward the peninsula, and less well for Mount Pleasant or Daniel Island patients, for whom two bridges and a Friday closure make routine visits awkward. If you want one office holding your whole family's records rather than splitting hygiene, crowns and emergencies across three practices, that is the case this one makes.

A neighborhood general practice on Savannah Highway in West Ashley handling cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, root canals and implant restorations for whole families, with same-day crown capability and room on the schedule for urgent problems. Open Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Charleston Family Dentistry make crowns in a single visit?
The practice advertises same-day crowns, which means the tooth is prepared and scanned, the restoration is milled in the office, and it is cemented during the same appointment. The practical benefit is skipping the temporary crown and the follow-up visit two weeks later. Not every tooth qualifies: a badly broken tooth may need a build-up or gum healing first, and some cases still call for a lab-made crown. Ask once the tooth has been examined.
I cracked a tooth this morning. Can I be seen the same day?
The office states that it handles urgent dental care, so calling early on a weekday is the right first move, and bring the broken piece if you still have it. A chipped edge with no pain is often repaired with bonding or a crown. If the fracture reaches the nerve, root canal treatment usually comes before the tooth is rebuilt. Hours run Monday through Thursday, so plan around a closed Friday.
Which parts of Charleston is this office easiest to reach from?
It sits on Savannah Highway in the 29414 stretch of West Ashley, west of the Ashley River. That makes it a short drive from West Ashley neighborhoods and a reasonable stop for Johns Island and Ravenel commuters already using Highway 17 toward the peninsula. It is far less convenient from Mount Pleasant or Daniel Island, where crossing two bridges for a routine cleaning rarely makes sense.

After hearing wonderful reviews, I finally decided to switch to this office and could not have enough great things to say! The staff was very welcoming and kind, and Kristen was extremely thorough but never painful. She explained every step and made sure I knew exactly what was going on, which was so appreciated. I could not recommend this office more!

I called to confirm they accepted my insurance and was able to get an appointment scheduled quickly—just a couple of days out. I went in as a new patient for my annual cleaning, and the whole team was great. It turned out I needed more than just a cleaning, and they were able to take care of everything right then and there. The only downside was that my “great” insurance didn’t end up covering as much as I wished it did.

I was so anxious prior to my dental procedure this morning, but Dr. V and his staff took great care of me today! My procedure was fast and pain-free. The staff made sure I was comfortable and even gave me a blanket since it was chilly in the office. The text messages prior to the procedure helped keep this busy mom organized, even receiving one the morning of the procedure so I wouldn’t forget. Thank you for providing great care! And I should also mention that my hygienist did an excellent job on my cleaning 2 days prior to my procedure. She was meticulous and made sure every tooth, nook and cranny was clean! Thank you!

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Raymond Vicente and the entire staff! I had 3 wisdom teeth extracted, and the procedure went way smoother than I expected. Dr. Raymond Vicen was very professional, caring, and made me feel comfortable the whole time. The recovery process has also been great thanks to the excellent work and clear instructions. I truly appreciate how kind and attentive everyone was throughout the experience. I highly recommend this office to anyone needing dental work done. Thank you again for the amazing care!
