About Coastal Kids Dental & Braces - Dorchester Road

8600 Dorchester Road is the inland end of the Coastal Kids map, up where North Charleston runs into Ladson and the Summerville commuter belt takes over. No part of the trip involves a bridge, which is most of the appeal out this way, and the parking sits flat and adjacent rather than in a garage you have to negotiate with a stroller.

Orthodontics carries much of the schedule at this office, and it helps to know what is actually happening while a wire is on. A bracket does not drag a tooth through bone. It applies steady light pressure, and the bone remodels around it: cells dissolve bone on the side the tooth is heading toward and lay it down behind. That biology sets the pace, which is why adjustments sit weeks apart rather than days, and why more force does not produce faster teeth. It also explains retainers. For months after the brackets come off, the fibres holding each tooth in its socket are still reorganising, and an unretained tooth drifts back toward where it began. Retention is not the optional epilogue to braces; it is the half that keeps the result.

Not every case has the same shape. Mild crowding in a growing jaw may need nothing beyond expansion and alignment. Severe crowding can require permanent teeth to be removed to make room. A bite that is skeletal rather than dental, where the jaws themselves are mismatched, has a treatment window tied to growth that eventually closes. Elastics are where most of the variation in outcome hides, because they work only for the hours a teenager actually wears them.

Everything else a child needs is handled here as well: exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, sealants, fillings, crowns, extractions, pulp therapy, space maintainers, laser tongue and lip tie correction, special-needs dentistry, and nitrous oxide when a child needs help settling enough for treatment to happen at all. Weekdays open at 7:30am and Saturday mornings run 8:00am to noon, which is where the wire changes and cleanings that cannot come out of a school day tend to land.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my child be in braces, and what decides that?
Less the calendar than what is being corrected. Aligning mild crowding in a sound bite is a shorter job than closing extraction spaces or improving a jaw relationship, and the same case moves faster in a cooperative mouth than in one where the elastics stay in a drawer. Bone has to remodel around every tooth as it shifts, and that pace cannot be forced by tightening harder.
Will my child need a retainer once the braces come off?
Yes, and indefinitely rather than for a season. After the brackets are removed the fibres around each tooth keep reorganising for months, and teeth continue drifting for years regardless of whether they were ever treated. Retainers are usually worn full-time at first, then at night. Losing one is worth a call the same week, because teeth can move enough in a fortnight that the replacement no longer seats.
Are there appointments outside school hours at the Dorchester Road office?
Weekdays open at 7:30am, early enough for a cleaning before the first bell, and this location holds a Saturday morning clinic from 8:00am to noon, though weekend slots vary week to week and are worth confirming when you book. For families out toward Ladson and Summerville, that pairing is often the difference between keeping an appointment and rescheduling it around a school day and a shift.

Great service

My daughter had her first dental appointment at 17 months here and it was not a great experience. They did not take their time with her to make her feel comfortable and barely spoke to either of us. We also waited almost an hour because of insurance (which I understand happens) but more communication about it all would have been nice. I would just not recommend this place for smaller kids.

They were just so sweet, so helpful. I made so many mistakes, but they fixed. It took such great care of my grandson. They were able to do the things they need to do for him. Cause with their knowledge on dealing with children, they are the best. I would recommend them for children of all ages

It’s been one month since we switched to Coastal Dental, and we couldn’t be happier with our experience. My daughter has been going to the dentist since she was 2 years old, but she has always been very anxious about dental visits. This was the first time she felt safe enough to go through both her cleaning and procedure. The team is simply amazing. They are kind, patient, and respectful with children. They explain every step of the process and know exactly how to make kids feel comfortable. Doing what you love with genuine care truly makes a difference, even in ways that may seem simple. Thank you for making such a positive impact on our family!

Always go above and beyond for both of my children! Neurodivergent friendly and accommodate my sensory sensitive kiddo with a quiet room and work with his comfort levels! When my oldest chipped his front tooth they worked us in and fixed it that day!! We are so appreciative!!

The staff is always so pleasant and warming. I moved out of the area but I drive 30 mins to bring my kids back to this office. Thank you for always making their experience better than what I’ve experience myself when I was younger. Kudos to you all!!

We are so happy to have found Coastal Kids! Dr. Jules and Dr. Calli have been incredible with our son. The hygienists, too! He just turned 5 and needed cavities taken care of, which required two separate appointments. I was honestly white-knuckling the first visit because of my own childhood experiences at the dentist - but it could not have gone better. He had no idea he had gotten shots at the first one (not needed for the second) and walked away thinking it was fun. By the second appointment, I felt completely at ease, and it was such a breeze. He genuinely loves coming in. He’s a very curious, animated kid, and they take the time to answer all of his questions and make him feel comfortable. It truly could not have been a better experience. As someone who grew up fearing the dentist, I’m so grateful my son won’t have those same memories.

From my very first phone call with Mary, I knew my son would be in good hands. She made us feel truly welcomed as new patients and was professional, patient, and friendly. When we arrived for his appointment, the entire staff reflected those same qualities—friendly, professional, and efficient. The experience was exactly what I had hoped for. I would highly recommend Coastal Kids!!
