About Coastal Kids Dental & Braces - Rivers Ave

The Promenade at Northwoods is a row of storefronts directly across Rivers Avenue from Northwoods Mall, and this office takes one of them — a dental visit you can reach on the same errand as the grocery run. That siting is not incidental. Rivers Avenue is a bus corridor as much as a driving one, and a children's office on it is reachable by households for whom taking a morning off work is not a real option.

The hours follow the same logic. Weekdays open at 7:30am, and this is one of the group's locations that adds a Saturday clinic from 8:00am to noon. A cleaning at half past seven, or on a Saturday, is a cleaning that happens rather than one postponed until a tooth starts hurting and the repair has grown.

Cost is the other barrier that keeps children out of a chair. South Carolina Medicaid is accepted in-network here, as are the commercial plans most local employers use: Delta Dental, United Concordia, Blue Cross Blue Shield, MetLife, Cigna, Guardian and Aetna. Claims are filed for you. A plan outside that list does not close the door, but the share you pay changes, so ask for a written estimate before treatment starts rather than after it. Patient forms are published in Spanish as well as English, which in this part of North Charleston removes a practical obstacle rather than a theoretical one.

Clinically, the weight sits on prevention, and sealants are the clearest illustration of why. The biting surface of a six-year molar is folded into fissures narrower than a single toothbrush bristle, so brushing physically cannot reach the floor of them. A sealant is a thin resin flowed into those grooves and set hard, turning a trap into a smooth surface. Two limits deserve saying out loud: sealants wear and need checking at every visit, and they cover only the chewing surface, not the contact points between teeth where floss is the only thing that reaches. Beyond prevention, the office restores decayed teeth with fillings and crowns, treats infected nerves in baby molars, fits space maintainers after an early tooth loss, extracts when a tooth cannot be kept, releases tongue and lip ties by laser, runs orthodontic treatment, sees children with special needs, and offers nitrous oxide. From Park Circle, Northwoods or Ladson it is a short run; from Mount Pleasant or James Island it is a stretch of 26 or 526 you would not drive without a reason.

The Coastal Kids office in The Promenade at Northwoods, across Rivers Avenue from Northwoods Mall, built around access: 7:30am weekday starts, a Saturday morning clinic, in-network coverage with South Carolina Medicaid and most major plans, and forms in Spanish as well as English. Sealants, fillings, crowns, pulp therapy, orthodontic treatment and nitrous oxide are all handled on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Rivers Avenue office see patients on Saturdays?
This location runs an 8:00am to noon Saturday clinic on top of weekdays from 7:30am to 4:30pm, though Saturday capacity is smaller than a weekday and worth confirming when you book. The office is in The Promenade at Northwoods, across from Northwoods Mall, which makes it a straightforward stop from Park Circle, Ladson or anywhere along the Rivers Avenue corridor.
Do you take Medicaid?
Yes, in-network, and the commercial roster is broad too: Delta Dental, United Concordia, Blue Cross Blue Shield, MetLife, Cigna, Guardian and Aetna, with claims filed on your behalf. If your plan sits outside that list the office will still file it, but your out-of-pocket share changes, so ask for the estimate in writing before treatment begins rather than reading it on an invoice.
What happens if my child needs a filling and cannot sit still for it?
Nitrous oxide is available here. It is breathed through a small nose mask, takes effect within a few minutes, and clears within a few minutes of switching back to pure oxygen, so a child leaves unimpaired rather than groggy and stays awake and responsive throughout. It takes the edge off anxiety and a strong gag reflex. It is not general anaesthesia, and it does nothing for a child who will not keep the mask on.

Love how welcoming and friendly everyone was in the office from beginning to end. I also love how the staff are so patient with the scared kids and the support they give out to help ease the nerves of the kids.

Normally, I would give this office 5 stars. However, today’s experience was disappointing. We drove our usual hour and 45 minutes for my daughter’s appointment, expecting to have all of her dental work completed. Unfortunately, Dr. Bethany refused to complete everything as originally planned. It was especially frustrating to make such a long trip, only to learn we will need to schedule another visit and rearrange our already busy schedule as a result. While I understand that patient care decisions are important, it was difficult to accept putting my daughter through the stress and discomfort of treatment without completing everything in one visit. It makes me question why someone would be put through that process more than necessary. That said, Tasha, the assistant, and the office manager were the highlight of our visit. They made us feel welcome, comfortable, and truly cared for—like family.

I absolutely enjoyed my experience with Coastal Kids. Everyone is so very patient. Even if some children are nervous, they create such a happy comfortable environment for the children to relax as get their teeth cleaned. The staff throughly explains the condition of your child teeth. Lastly, the staff manager Ms. Wandsha has the brightest, whitest, straight teeth ever! She welcomes everyone with her warm personality and enthusiasm with a great smile to match. I appreciate the entire staff at Coastal Kids on Rivers Ave!
