About Coastal Kids Dental & Braces - West Ashley

Two specialties share the building on Wappoo Road: pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. That pairing is the whole idea behind Coastal Kids. A child can have a cleaning, a filling and a braces adjustment inside one practice, and the dentist who has watched the arch develop since the first visit is the one who flags when it is time to involve the orthodontic side. The West Ashley office is one of several Coastal Kids locations around the Lowcountry, alongside Rivers Avenue, Dorchester Road and Point Hope, and records move between them if a family relocates.

On braces, timing is the thing to understand early. The standard recommendation is an orthodontic screening at about age seven, which surprises most parents, because at seven a child still has a mouth largely full of baby teeth. The screening is not about starting treatment. It exists to catch the small number of problems that are far easier to correct while the jaw is still growing, such as a crossbite, an underbite, or permanent teeth erupting into the wrong space. Most children screened at seven need nothing at all until their permanent teeth arrive around eleven or twelve. A minority benefit from a short early phase that shortens the main phase later or avoids extractions entirely.

The general pediatric side covers exams, cleanings, sealants, fluoride, fillings, crowns, pulp therapy, space maintainers after an early tooth loss, extractions, and laser correction of tongue and lip ties. Nitrous oxide is available for children who need help holding still, and the practice treats children with special needs. It is in network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife, United Concordia and Medicaid. That last one carries real weight locally, since Medicaid participation is far from universal among pediatric dental offices here. Appointment forms are offered in English and Spanish.

808 Wappoo Road sits close to the Wappoo Cut, near enough to the Folly Road bridge that James Island families can reach it without crossing downtown, and handy to the neighborhoods around South Windermere and Wappoo Hall. Weekday hours are 8am to 5pm, and the Saturday morning clinic until noon is the slot working parents want most, so it books out well ahead of the weekday ones.

A combined pediatric and orthodontic office on Wappoo Road serving children from infancy through the teen years, with braces, nitrous oxide sedation, special-needs care and laser tongue-tie correction in house. In network with Medicaid and the major commercial plans, and open Saturday mornings until noon.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child be checked for braces?
Around age seven, which surprises most parents because a seven-year-old still has mostly baby teeth. The screening is not about starting treatment. It exists to catch the small number of problems that are far easier to correct while the jaw is still growing, such as a crossbite, an underbite or severe crowding. Most children need nothing further until their permanent teeth arrive at eleven or twelve.
Does the West Ashley office take Medicaid?
Yes. Coastal Kids lists itself as in network with Medicaid alongside Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, MetLife and United Concordia, and files claims on behalf of patients. Medicaid participation is not universal among pediatric dental offices in the Charleston area, which is one practical reason families travel to this location. Confirm your specific plan when you call, since networks change.
What is a space maintainer and would my child need one?
It is a small metal appliance cemented to a tooth beside a gap, used when a baby tooth is lost earlier than nature intended. Teeth drift toward empty space, and if the neighbors close the gap the permanent tooth underneath has nowhere to come through, turning a simple problem into an orthodontic one. The appliance holds the space open until the adult tooth erupts, then it comes out.

In The past year, it has been very challenging getting someone from the office to return phone calls. Frustrating to the point that I have considered taking my children to another dental office. And today my children had a scheduled appointment which was canceled by the dental staff, without notification . This is disappointing services over the past year has not been good.

They do a good job with handling wild toddlers that don't want to be there. My little girl has been great about brushing her teeth (and letting us help her) since she was about 8 months. But immediately pon her first dentist appointment here at age 1, she was NOT having it. Screaming, thrashing, toddler-sized fit ensued. The staff was amazing -- so patient and calm with her, providing a matt for her to lay across my lap with her head towards them, etc. They know that some little kids just aren't gonna comply, and they do excellent in working with them! They noticed how tight her teeth are packed (and they are) and taught me how to floss her teeth! Flossing has been a big hit at home for a year now, and I definitely credit them for it. Her two year old visit has now come and gone, and she's still a bit of a hurricane when it comes to them looking at their teeth. But as always, these guys are professionals and are super sweet to the kids. When billing mishaps happened, the manager was quick to reach out and make this right! All in all, I'd say I've been super pleased with this place. No place is FLAWLESS. But if you want great staff and empathetic management, this will be a good fit for your little one.

Huge thank you to the team at Coastal Kids Dental in West Ashley. Our six year old had a dental emergency on a Saturday and I called and left a message assuming I wouldn’t hear back for 24 hours; however, Luis called me within five minutes! He reviewed her chart, had me send a photo of the tooth, and gave me steps to take until we could get in for a visit he scheduled. He was so reassuring which put my mama heart at ease and even sent me a follow up text to let me know I could reach out to him any time until they could see her Monday. The care that Coastal Kids Dental provided my daughter is unheard of this day and age.

I knew I was going to be running a little late due to traffic, so I gave them a call to let them know. They were very understanding and said, 'We'll see you when you get here, Ms. Brown, and thanks for giving us a heads up.' That right there made my day; it's the understanding and little things for me 🥰. When we arrived, even though we were late, they still treated us as if we were on time, and everything went smoothly. At the end of the visit, the young lady asked me how I was doing, which made my day, especially since I'm going through a lot right now as a person and a super mom with no breaks in between for myself at times. That meant a lot to me and made me feel like there's hope, so I can go about the rest of my day happy knowing that someone asked and cared. #Everyone was wonderfully warm and welcoming those ladies are superb

This place is great! I wish I went here as a kid. There are TVs over every chair so the kids have something to distract them. Lots of fun paintings on the walls. Everyone was extremely nice and very complimentary. I brought my 11 month old and they had the perfect setup for him so he would be comfortable. He didn't cry. Both the dentist and hygienist were very nice and gentle with him. He was never scared. It was the best experience possible for baby's first dentist visit!
