About David O. Smith DMD Family Dentistry

David O. Smith DMD Family Dentistry sits on South 700 East in Salt Lake City's East Central neighborhood, a practice built around treating patients of every age under one roof rather than routing kids and adults to separate specialists. The office handles the day-to-day work of keeping a mouth healthy alongside the less routine moments — a cracked filling, a tooth that suddenly aches, a smile you've been meaning to do something about for years. That mix is the point: you don't need a referral to move between a routine cleaning and a same-visit conversation about a crown.

Cleanings and gum disease treatment cover the maintenance side, catching inflammation before it works into the bone that supports your teeth. When decay goes past what a filling can fix, the practice moves to crowns (caps that rebuild a damaged tooth) or bridges (a fixed replacement anchored to the teeth beside a gap). Root canals treat infection inside a tooth's nerve as an alternative to pulling it, and extractions remain the option when a tooth can't be saved. Teeth whitening and broader cosmetic work sit alongside that restorative list, and emergency dentistry stays on the schedule for problems that can't wait for a routine appointment.

If you've been putting off a toothache because you're not sure it's worth the cost, this is a place built for that hesitation — one roof for everything from a routine cleaning to the crown or extraction a tooth actually needs.

What a visit costs here depends on what's actually going on — a cleaning and an extraction aren't priced the same, and two extractions of different difficulty aren't either, so the honest answer comes after a look at the tooth, not before. That variability matters most when a bridge or root canal is on the table alongside cosmetic work, since those decisions often get made together rather than as separate appointments. David O. Smith DMD Family Dentistry reads less like a practice built around one procedure and more like a standing option for whatever your teeth need next — filling, whitening, or something in between.

David O. Smith DMD Family Dentistry, in Salt Lake City's East Central neighborhood, handles cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, and emergency care for patients of every age, plus teeth whitening and cosmetic work.

What are tooth-coloured fillings made of?
They are composite resin, a mix of plastic and fine glass particles that is shaded to match the surrounding tooth and bonded into place. The main appeal over silver amalgam is appearance, particularly on teeth that show when you smile.
How long do dental fillings last?
It varies with the material, the size of the filling, and where it sits in the mouth. Fillings are not permanent — they wear, chip, and eventually leak at the edges, which is one reason routine check-ups examine existing work as well as looking for new decay.
Is a professional cleaning necessary if I brush and floss well?
Yes, because brushing and flossing cannot remove tartar once it has hardened onto the tooth. Only a professional instrument can take that off, and it is the hardened deposit rather than soft plaque that drives most gum problems.

Dr. Smith and his staff are highly competent, and also welcoming and friendly. Our family has visited this dental practice for decades. It is always such a pleasure to see Dr. Smith, an excellent dentist who makes it easy to feel relaxed and confident under his care. Kami, the dental hygienist who has worked with me, is very articulate and supportive in explaining how and why certain care habits make such a difference in our own health. In short, we all actually look forward to visiting Dr. Smith and his staff, and no matter what the needed procedures might be, we feel comfortable and confident.

David Smith Family Dental is my favorite dentist, and the best dentist's office I have ever been to in my life! The staff is so incredibly nice, genuine, and patient. They really care, and they are not rushing! That is so appreciated in a medical office that is typically uncomfortable for people, including myself. I refer everyone here in SLC. When I moved away, I was so sad to lose the office, and I came right back when I moved back to SLC. The last thing I'll say is that they have the BEST dental hygienists I've ever encountered. My dental hygiene has improved tremendously since learning from them and getting their encouragement. The only downside of being a patient here is that I now have SUPER high standards for dentists.

Dr. Smith, his assistant, and hygienist are all wonderful. They are all so caring and gentle in everything they do. From X-rays, to cleanings, and all dental work, they don't rush the process and truly take the time to ensure a pain free and no anxiety visit. Almost makes me "like" going to the dentist.😉

I walked into Dr. Smiths office terrified. My dental history, is harsh. Today, I walk away with a healthy mouth and a nicer smile. Most importantly I am no longer afraid. He and his staff are kind and patient. I would drive across the country if I need more work. Thank you Dr. Smith
