About Desert Sun Pediatric Dentistry

Based on East Brown Road in Mesa, Arizona, Desert Sun Pediatric Dentistry is a dental practice serving the area. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit. Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Modern digital X-rays use a very low dose and are taken only when there is a clinical reason. They show decay between teeth and problems with developing adult teeth that cannot be seen by looking.
How do I stop my child getting cavities?
Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, supervising until they have the dexterity to do it properly, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear during the day. Frequency of sugar matters more than the total amount.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease or a history of decay a dentist may suggest coming more often. The point of regular visits is mostly to catch problems while they are still small and cheap to treat.

I could cry. Its been such a battle finding the right dentist with just the right price range for my kiddos. Before my youngest first dentist appointment, I was very hesitant. You see, we are new here to ARIZONA. Before moving here every pediatrics we visited in our previous State said we had to pay out of pocket over $1000 - $2000 just to get one tooth done for my oldest, even with mine and my husband Dental insurance. And we have one of the best dental insurance out there. Long story short, I feel so overwhelmed with happiness having found this place. My kids first appointment was for cleaning and tooth ache and they were able to squeeze them in to get those tooth ache and other tooth issues resolved same day. Without breaking my bank account. They are alrdy on their way to finishing their tooth work. Dr. West and his staff are very friendly and very patient. My youngest was scared thinking about the pain he'd endure during the process, but they made him feel so comfortable. Both appointments did not take long from the moment we checked in. Very satisfied with Desert Sun Pediatric Dentisrty.

It’s such a great experience at this office. We have not had to wait at all, the staff is very friendly, and my kids always feel like it’s just another nice cleaning. No dentist fear at all. The office is clean and bright, appears super efficient and well organized. Doc is funny, warm and friendly! Affordable professional quality care. We had dental ins and this office wasn’t in network..we dropped that insurance and returned here.

Desert Sun was incredibly welcoming and made the whole experience so wonderful. My toddler is usually very squirmy but he felt right at home with the staff. The cherry on top was when we were leaving and I heard another, older child coming in saying, “I love the dentist!!” I don’t remember having that kind of impression about the dentist as a child so the fact that an older child was excited to come to the dentist, was impressive. It tells me that our experience was not unique and this is just the norm for this office! We’re so happy to have found Desert Sun!

We are so very happy after switching over to Desert Sun. My daughter was so afraid of the dentist but she loves this office. The atmosphere is so kid friendly and the staff and dentist are amazing, friendly and know how to treat young children. I am so happy we found them.

Wonderful 1st experience for our 3 year old son! After our appointment my son didn’t want to leave the office. The main thing that stood out was the happiness in the office from the front desk to the dental assistant to the dentist. Everyone was welcoming and kind and I believe that is the main reason our son had such a wonderful first time at the dentist. 🙂 Thank you!

Dr. West and his team were so kind and helpful for our daughter’s first trip to the dentist! She was nervous but they did a great job of trying to make her feel better and making the experience as quick as possible. They also have some really cute toys to keep kids busy in the waiting room!
