About Discovery Pediatric Dentistry

Discovery Pediatric Dentistry operates on California Street in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco, California. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not. You can reach Discovery Pediatric Dentistry through this page to ask a question, check current availability, or request an appointment.

When do children start losing baby teeth?
Usually from around age six, continuing until roughly age twelve, though the timing varies widely between children. Adult molars also come through at the back around age six without any baby tooth falling out first.

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth daily covers most of it. Limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount consumed.

Working in the dental community for 30 years, I would highly recommend Discovery for your child!! I know I will be recommending them and sending both private and professional referrals to them. The team is patience and caring. The front desk is wonderful explaining all admin procedures. The doctors walk you through the process of each procedure and only do what your child and family is comfortable with. The assistant Priscilla had my son’s attention and trust right away. The doctors as a team collaborated and made my son’s experience so wonderful that he wanted to stay even after the procedure to play and talk with the whole team. We look forward to to seeing the team again soon!

Going to the dentist can sometimes be a bit daunting. Especially for kids, but I’ve had such an incredibly positive experience with my daughter’s dental care. Honestly the entire team there is just wonderful so friendly and really on top of things professionally. But I really have to give a special shout out to Dr. Melanie Perea-Corkish who takes care of my daughter. She has amazing way with kids. She’s so patient, gentle just genuinely good at what she does. My daughter always leaves with smile and that means the world to me. I truly believe she’s the best dentist. I confidently recommend her services to all my family and friends assured they will receive the same high standard of care.

Dr. Melanie and her staff has always been professional, amazing and welcoming! We’ve been coming here ever since my eldest was a toddler. And now, he is 16 years and my 2nd child who’s now 10 years old. Always great experience!!

Absolutely the best pediatric dental care. From the front desk, to the hygienists, to every dentist - sweet, professional and extremely knowledgable. The staff takes great care to do what's best for each patient. Our boys have been patients since elementary school, now they're in high school and college!

There is a reason Discovery Pediatric Dentistry has 5-stars! A truly wonderful experience. I am so happy my husband and I found the perfect dentist for our son. Took our 2 year old there for his first dentist appointment and was of course nervous how he'd react. First, the office itself is so kid-friendly and calming, the perfect way to start an appointment. Then came both the dental assistant and dentist who were so knowledgeable, gentle, and caring with him. You can tell my son had a really positive experience and already wants to go back!

Dr. Emily Wang is a very kind, caring, and knowledgeable dentist. She was so informative before, during and after our visits for my son. It’s very clear she’s very passionate about her profession and truly cares about the well being of her patients. The whole office staff is super friendly and accommodating. Thank you for an excellent visit and for helping us plan for the best dental health for our children.
