About District Smiles

District Smiles operates on Albemarle Street Northwest in the Tenleytown area of Washington, District of Columbia. At the core of a general dental practice is preventive and restorative care: checkups, professional cleanings, fillings, and screening for decay and gum disease before either becomes a bigger problem. It is the kind of appointment most people need on a routine schedule rather than only when something hurts.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway. Do not recommend this place. Despite my insurance policy they charged me more than 500 dollars upfront payment, taking advantage that I didnt really know how the system works being a foreigner. It took them months to resolve the claim with the insurance while the insurance comapany tried to reach by phone several times, I wrote numerous emails and requested the reimbursement. At some point they started ignoring my emails and until today keep my money despite the insurance has issued checks directly to the office to cover my claim. I was later treated by different dentists in DC and havent faced this abuse of a client and ignorance in communication. Avoid coming here.

Had to edit my review. I went through three dentists here and I’m still dealing with effects years later. An inexperienced dentist destroyed a tooth with faulty crowns and 10k later I have an implant.

Similar to many here. Services seemed fine. Billing and insurance were handled poorly. And misled to believe it was fully covered by my insurance carrier when in fact it was out of network. Stuck with a large bill after the fact - which was unexpected. I would not recommend.

The actual hygienist and dental work was fine. However, those handling the insurance info and billing were frustrating- when asked whether my insurance was accepted, I was told yes. What they meant was that the insurance company could be accepted, not whether the provider was in network or not for my plan. This led to being charged excessive amounts for a cleaning and filling, with this coming to light after the fact. Blame also goes to a poorly updated insurance webpage as well, but lack of transparency at every step until it is too late is the general frustration. Best solution that I learned living in DC- get confirmation in an email before going to a dentist that the provider is in network, or see a dentist outside of the DC area to avoid unnecessary charges and shady practices.

My husband and I got cleanings and exams as new patients after confirming that District Smiles was in network with our dental insurance. 6 months later we were sent a surprise very large out of network bill. The office and their billing office have been unresponsive and unhelpful as I try to get this bill removed from my account, I have been trying to reach management for weeks to no avail. Surprise bills are illegal and I cannot recommend District Smiles. Update: District Smiles removed our outstanding balance as a courtesy. It was a frustrating situation but I am grateful it has been resolved.

Where do I start????? From the ease of making an appointment to the professional greeting and mannerisms of everyone in this office, I am extremely satisfied. William is very knowledgeable and remembers all the details of my (and my daughter) treatment plans. Syed did an amazing job cleaning my teeth in the most gentle manner I have ever experienced. Diamond is a gem (pun intended)...always courteous and very professional. But let's talk about Dr. Majd....not only did he do a root canal where I experienced no pain or swelling , but he (personally) called me the next day after hours to follow-up. I have recommended this office to many friends and colleagues since my first visit.

I made an appointment here for an impromptu cleaning and now they’re my new dental team! Everyone is warm, professional, and thorough. I left without any questions unanswered as well as a solid treatment plan. They are thoughtful and patient about comfort/discomfort while in treatment, and take non rushed time to help sort through things like insurance and discuss options and health. I was able to schedule my follow up treatments promptly and always feel very comfortable and well taken care of- thank you!

I never thought going to the dentist would be so pleasant! I've had a couple bad doctors appointments in DC, so I was really relieved to find a place where everyone was so kind and helpful. William at the front desk was wonderful and helped me sort out my insurance, which was a big relief. He explained my dental plan to me in detail which I also really appreciated. The assistant and doctor were both very kind and gentle. I didn't feel rushed as I often do, and would definitely recommend this office to anyone looking for a new dentist.
