About Doug Lewis Dentistry

Doug Lewis Dentistry runs a Five Points South solo practice on 17th Street South, in the urban district just east of the UAB campus where the residential blocks mix with student housing and the medical-corridor offices. The format is genuinely solo — one named dentist, smaller team, longer visit pace — which gives the practice a different rhythm than the larger group offices nearby. Patients here tend to value seeing the same dentist across years rather than rotating through providers.

Cavity treatment covers the routine general-dentistry range. Dr. Lewis handles tooth-colored composite restorations as the default material, with single-surface and multi-surface fillings, replacement work when older restorations have failed, and the call between filling and crown when more tooth structure has been compromised by larger decay. Beyond fillings, services include cleanings and exams, root canals, crowns and bridges, extractions, gum-disease screening, and emergency dental care. The visit pace allows longer chair-side conversations about treatment options than chain offices typically permit when their schedule books are packed.

If you've felt rushed at high-volume practices and you want a dentist who actually walks through your X-rays in detail before recommending treatment, solo offices like this one tend to fit that preference by default.

Patients searching for dentist for whole family in Birmingham, family dentist in Birmingham, or general dentistry in Birmingham, AL who prefer solo-practice continuity over chain efficiency often gravitate toward offices like this. Doug Lewis Dentistry fits that solo-practice pattern. The new-patient exam combines comprehensive X-rays, periodontal screening, and a treatment-plan review at a pace that leaves room for questions. For Five Points South and UAB-adjacent residents looking for a long-term solo dentist, this 17th Street South practice is a reasonable first appointment. Insurance acceptance, hours, and current new-patient availability shift across the year, so a phone call before booking is the most reliable way to confirm what's in-network and which slots open up this week. If you've had recent medical changes — new medications, recent surgery, ongoing conditions — flagging them at intake matters more than patients usually expect, since several common drugs interact with routine dental work.

What services does Doug Lewis Dentistry offer?
Listed services at Doug Lewis Dentistry include Cosmetic Dentistry, Root Canal Treatment, Emergency Dentistry, Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges. The full list is shown on this page.
What are the early signs of gum disease?
Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, redness and puffiness along the gumline, and persistent bad breath are the usual first indicators. Bleeding is the one most often dismissed, and it is the clearest early warning.
Is gum disease reversible?
The early stage, gingivitis, is reversible with thorough cleaning and better daily plaque control. Once it has progressed to periodontitis and bone around the teeth has been lost, that bone does not grow back — treatment then aims to halt further loss.
Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening is not considered damaging to enamel. Short-lived sensitivity afterward is the usual side effect. The risks that do exist come mostly from overusing unsupervised products rather than from a properly applied treatment.

I have repeatedly provided my correct insurance information, but my primary insurance continues to be entered incorrectly. I have also had issues with my account being combined with my husband's account in the past. I recently updated my coverage and was concerned that the billing staff appeared unfamiliar with my TRICARE For Life coverage. I am also being billed in 2026 for a service from March 2025. Please provide a detailed itemized statement and claim history showing how both insurance policies were billed, the payments received, any denials, and the reason this balance is being billed now.

It's always a pleasure to come to Dr. Lewis! His staff are all so friendly & efficient. Jeannie cleaned my teeth today & she was awesome! She's so interactive, always asking if you're ok, do you need anything, etc., plus my teeth feel so good. She's so friendly you feel like you're chatting with an old friend. Dr. Lewis is so much fun to be around, yet he's very professional when it comes to decisions about treatment. I respect him so much! And I always enjoy catching up with Mandy. When you leave, you feel like you've been with family!

Thank you very much to Rachel and Dr. Lewis for being so patient and kind to me today. My teeth were a mess after years of no visits to a dentist, largely because of extreme sensitivity and a few stressful previous experiences as a result. I’ve got a long road still ahead of me, but thanks to Rachel’s diligent efforts and Dr. Lewis’s effective pain management, I made it through and I’m actually willing to come back!

I have been Dr. Lewis’ patient for about five years. I go for regular cleanings and check ups as well as a few more complicated issues. He is very knowledgeable and thorough. His staff is so compassionate and accomplished. Dr. Lewis owns his practice. I like going to a dentist’s office that is not corporately owned. I feel like I receive more personal service.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Dr. Lewis has a great team. He seems very experienced and understanding. A few friends recommended them, and I was impressed. Comfortable and clean office, excellent playlist (music helps so much). There is parking with plenty of shade, and it's a walkable area close to UAB and Southside. Rachel the hygienist did a great job cleaning my teeth. They have switched to an online system, but she helped me through one form that was confusing. The front desk ladies were super nice on the phone and in person, dealing with scheduling and insurance stuff. Thank you ladies and Dr. Lewis!

I had a great experience here. The staff was very professional, friendly, and took the time to explain everything clearly. I went for a cleaning, and they walked me through the whole process so I felt comfortable and informed. I didn’t feel any pain during the cleaning, which was amazing because I’ve had painful experiences at other dental offices before. They kept asking if I was comfortable and made sure I was okay the entire time. The service was excellent, and I highly recommend this dental office to anyone looking for quality care.

I’ve been with Dr. Lewis’ practice for 5+ years, and the folks who work here have made it such a pleasure to come to the dentist every time! All the hygienists are so warm and welcoming and make you feel comfortable and heard if you have any issues. They do excellent work on top of that, too! If I weren’t moving away I’d stay with them forever! If going to the dentist makes you anxious, come to this one ☺️
