About Downtown Endodontic Group

Based on Southwest 10th Avenue in the Southwest Portland area of Portland, Oregon, Downtown Endodontic Group is a dental practice serving the area. Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the space, and allows the natural tooth to be kept rather than extracted. Its reputation for being painful is largely outdated — carried out under local anaesthetic, it typically relieves pain rather than causing it.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit. Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Downtown Endodontic Group located in Portland?
Downtown Endodontic Group is on Southwest 10th Avenue in the Southwest Portland area of Portland, Oregon (97205).
What days is Downtown Endodontic Group open?
Downtown Endodontic Group is open Monday through Thursday. Contact the practice through this page to confirm current appointment times before travelling.
What services does Downtown Endodontic Group offer?
Listed services at Downtown Endodontic Group include Root Canal Treatment. The full list is shown on this page.
Is a root canal as painful as people say?
The reputation is largely outdated. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and is usually no more uncomfortable than having a filling. The severe pain people associate with root canals is generally the infection beforehand, which the treatment relieves.
How do I know if I need a root canal?
Common signs are lingering pain after something hot or cold, pain when biting down, a tooth that darkens, or a persistent pimple-like spot on the gum. Diagnosis needs an examination and usually an X-ray, since these can point to other problems too.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease or a history of decay a dentist may suggest coming more often. The point of regular visits is mostly to catch problems while they are still small and cheap to treat.

I’ll start by saying this dentist is a really great dentist. He had some tricks to make the pain go away with numbing and it was really great! The reason for the 3 stars is due to how he handles dental anxiety. If you have bad dental anxiety, I do not recommend this dentist. I needed a moment to breathe due to some anxiety from a previous appointment with a different dentist and I communicated that to dr Johnson. My hand was in front of my face and he continued to try to remove my hand from my face to continue with my teeth after I asked him three times to give me a moment. I didn’t think that was very professional at all. He’s very efficient and very direct and would be a great dentist for those without dental anxiety. He did a fantastic job overall, just not the greatest anxiety experience with listening to patients and having patience.

I have been having work done by Dr. Johnson for years. Over 10 years. He has done at least 3 root canals for me. I still have all the teeth he has worked on. Great work!!

I have been to this clinic several times ove the past 10+ years. Dr Johnson is a great endodontist. He is very knowledgeable and willing to take time to answer questions with clarity and kindness. The staff is warm and welcoming. Their professional environment put me at ease right away. I highly recommend this clinic for anyone who has any anxiety, at all, with endodontic treatments or is looking for an especially professional and comfortable experience.

I showed up for what has not been my first rodeo, … not my first root canal. Everything about my experience with them was positive, Friendly and professional. I was in significant pain and I was so thankful that they were somehow able to fit me in quickly. They took care of the problem. I highly recommend this choice to anyone in a similar situation
