About Dr. Niloofar Zarkesh, DDS | Periodontist in San Jose

Dr. Niloofar Zarkesh, DDS | Periodontist in San Jose provides dental care on South Monroe Street in the West Valley area of San Jose, California. Gum disease treatment ranges from a deeper professional cleaning for early inflammation through to more involved periodontal care once bone around the teeth has started to be affected. Bleeding gums are usually the earliest sign, and the early stage is reversible with proper cleaning and better daily plaque control.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts. Can gum disease make you lose teeth?
Yes — advanced gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It destroys the bone and fibres holding teeth in place, which is why teeth eventually loosen, and it usually progresses without pain.
What is scaling and root planing?
It is a deep cleaning that goes below the gumline to remove bacterial deposits from the root surfaces and smooth them so the gum can reattach. It is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, often over more than one appointment.
How can I look after my teeth between appointments?
Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth daily covers most of it. Limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount consumed.

Dr Zarkesh taught by reviewing the diagnostics with me so I could make a good decision. She was thorough with details which made a huge difference. I had no problems with the antibiotics nor the pain medication as I had during a root canal. She is very hands on and oversaw everything which gave me confidence for the surgery. I do not give doctors 5 stars but in my experience she deserves it.

Dr. Zarkesh and her staff are amazing and so patient with my 83 year old mom who has dementia. She has a hard time following instructions, but they are so gentle and sweet with her. I highly recommend Perio-4-U

Dr. Zarkesh is a very skilled and compassionate periodontist, who completed a tissue graft from my palate to cover my lower incisor roots. When I had post surgery concerns, she fit me in to her schedule to check how everything was healing. I recommend her and her office team at perio4u for your periodontal needs.

My experience with Dr Zarkesh was great. The procedure she performed went better than I could have hoped for. I was expecting some lingering pain after the procedure especially after the novocaine wore off, and into the next day. I had none. I haven’t needed to take any of the ibuprofen they prescribed. She and her assistant worked very well together, making it a very efficient procedure. The whole staff at Perio4u seems very experienced and skilled. They are very easy to deal with and communicate all the steps you are going to go through. They keep you informed.
