About Dr. Peter Nelson

Dr. Peter Nelson is a dental practice on West Thunderbird Road in Glendale, Arizona. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most of the swelling and discomfort settles within about a week, with the first two or three days the most noticeable. Surgical removal of an impacted tooth generally takes longer to recover from than a simple extraction.
Why do dentists take X-rays?
Decay between teeth and problems below the gumline are invisible to the naked eye, so X-rays are what reveal them. Modern digital images use a low dose and are taken only when clinically justified.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Nelson and his team. Today I had a very extensive procedure that included five extractions, two impacted wisdom teeth (upper and lower), and a sinus perforation repair. I have severe dental anxiety and an intense fear of being put to sleep, so this wasn’t just another dental appointment for me—it was something I had been dreading for a long time. Dr. Nelson was excellent. He was professional, confident, and clearly very experienced. I felt like I was in capable hands. What truly made this experience exceptional, though, was his surgical assistant, Amber. From the moment I arrived, I had a full-blown panic attack. I was crying, shaking, and extremely anxious. Amber never made me feel embarrassed or rushed. She stayed by my side, explained every step before it happened, and continuously checked on me to make sure I was comfortable. She suggested using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help calm me before my IV sedation, and she carefully monitored me the entire time, making sure the amount was comfortable and adjusting it as needed. That alone made a tremendous difference. As they prepared to start the sedation, she continued talking me through everything so there were no surprises. Even as I was waking up, I remember hearing her reassuring me that I had done a great job and that they were almost finished. Those simple words and comforting gestures meant more than she’ll probably ever know. When you’re someone with severe anxiety, having a compassionate person beside you can completely change your experience. Since I couldn’t have a family member with me, Amber became that reassuring presence, and I will always be grateful for the kindness, patience, and genuine compassion she showed me. If I ever need another oral surgery, I wouldn’t hesitate to return to Dr. Nelson and his team. Their skill, professionalism, and especially Amber’s exceptional care turned what I thought would be one of the worst days into an experience where I felt truly cared for. Thank you, Dr. Nelson and Amber, for helping me get through something I honestly wasn’t sure I could do.

Extremely High Priced. Over $7000 just to remove one tooth surgically. $260 per 15 minutes. WAY TOO MUCH... Greed has gotten the better half of everyone in the United States.

Dr Nelson and the surgical experience with his staff was a great experience. Staff is wonderful. Pricing honest unlike some others. It’s clear, that this doctor is a scholar and is very professionally engaged in his profession and the work he does. I’m a retired critical care RN. I know what makes a great doctor. And this is that. Many thanks and appreciation for your help.

While Dr. Nelson may not be the most jovial person in the office, he is a true master at his craft. What he may lack in bedside manner, his staff more than makes up for it with friendly and professional service. I would highly recommend them without reservation.

I had such a positive experience with my wisdom teeth removal with Dr. Nelson and his team. All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted and were not going to be an easy surgery. Dr.Nelson was informative and caring and I knew what to expect going in. The day of I was anxious and the Surgical assistant Marcela, instantly made me feel so much more comfortable. She was professional, genuinely caring, and kind. Before I knew it I was asleep, and I woke up not remembering anything. They took great care after the procedure and helped me get into the vehicle I would be leaving in. Dr. Nelson gave a very prompt follow up call and was truly available for any concerns or question I had post-op. It’s been a week and I am healing well. The follow up appointment was quick, his team was so friendly and I felt confident leaving knowing how to take care of myself as I continue to heal and that I’m healing normally! Thank you so much, Dr. Nelson for your skill, the way that you truly care about your patients, and the warm offices you have created. Both the Glendale and Phoenix offices were a great experience. I am proud to refer Dr. Nelson to anyone in my personal or professional life that may need him. Thank you!

Dr. Nelson and his staff are very professional, welcoming and friendly. I had dental implants and I was very nervous to get the implants done. Dr.Nelson and his staff explained in detail about the dental surgery procedures and this made me feel comfortable. I also like the way Dr.Nelson calls himself to check up on me after my dental surgery procedures. My experience with Dr.Nelson and his office staff have been pleasant and kind.
