About Dr. Robert Brinks Austin, DMD

Based on East Brown Road in Mesa, Arizona, Dr. Robert Brinks Austin, DMD is a dental practice serving the area. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost. What age is best to have wisdom teeth taken out?
Late teens to early twenties is often easier, because the roots are less fully formed and bone is more forgiving, so healing tends to be quicker. Removal is still routinely done later when there is a reason for it.
Why do wisdom teeth cause problems?
They arrive last, often into a jaw with no room left, so they become impacted or come through at an angle. Partly erupted wisdom teeth are also very difficult to clean, which is why they are prone to repeated infection and decay.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease or a history of decay a dentist may suggest coming more often. The point of regular visits is mostly to catch problems while they are still small and cheap to treat.

This is my second time seeing Dr. Austin. Both experiences were excellent. The first time, after a mountain bike accident in 2011, he rebuilt my upper and lower jaws, including my teeth. The results were stellar—no one could tell I had surgery! This time, I had an infected tooth that needed surgical removal and a bone graft to prepare for a new tooth. Once again, the work was excellent—minimal discomfort as I heal. The staff is extremely friendly, personable, and genuinely concerned for your well-being. They’re just a phone call away if there’s an emergency. I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Austin and his team. I’m grateful I was referred, and I’d gladly refer others too.

Dr. Austin is super friendly and didn’t hesitate one bit to explain the procedure that needs to be done. I’m also thankful that he has great knowledge and came to the solution of waiting with this procedure to be done due to a medical procedure I had done not too long ago. I definitely recommend Dr. Austin.

I am an Operating Room nurse, and am very discerning about the doctors I choose to take care of me and my family. My entire family - including me, my husband, both kids, and my Dad - have had care by Dr Austin and others in this phenomenal group of doctors. They’re professional, compassionate and so highly skilled!!! I can’t recommend them more highly. You can put your trust in them.

AZ Max is where you want to go if you need oral surgery. I can't say enough about the kind and caring office staff. Everyone here is very friendly, efficient and professional. Dr Austin is knowledgeable and put me at ease. The bonus was I had an easy recovery with very little pain. I was surprised by the thoughtfulness of a lovely floral bouquet I received at home after the surgery. No one could ask for a better experience.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Austin and his team! I’ve had two surgeries with him. Both experiences were outstanding from start to finish. Dr. Austin is not only highly skilled but also incredibly calm and reassuring, which made the entire process smooth and worry free. I slept sound the night before each surgery and that is not like me. I was that confident after meeting the Az Max Team. His surgical assistant, Andrea, was amazing. So professional, kind, and attentive throughout. She made me feel comfortable and cared for every step of the way. The front office staff is equally impressive. Christie and the rest of the team are welcoming, organized and genuinely friendly. This makes such a difference when you’re coming in for surgery. The aftercare I received was excellent. I always felt supported, had clear instructions, and knew I could reach out if I needed anything. Thanks to Dr. Austin and his staff, what could have been a stressful experience was instead calm, positive, and successful. I even received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from them during my recovery. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Austin, Andrea, Christie, and the entire office to anyone in need of oral surgery. They are simply the best!
