About Dr. Timothy R. Liptak, DMD
Dr. Timothy R. Liptak took over this Ashley Avenue office in 2008 from his predecessor, Dr. W. Steven Ray, so the building has been treating downtown Charleston families across two generations of dentists. Liptak earned his DMD from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and has been in practice since the mid-1990s. The practice describes itself as small, progressive and modern, and that first word is the honest one: this is a compact peninsula office with a lead dentist and associates, not a multi-provider group with a rotating schedule. If seeing the same person at every recall matters to you, that structure counts for more than any single piece of equipment.
Implants are among the treatments the office is known for, and the part patients most often misjudge is the calendar. An implant is, physically, a titanium screw sunk into the jawbone, and it has to knit with the bone around it before it is strong enough to carry a crown. That fusion typically takes three to six months and cannot be hurried. Cases that need an extraction first, or a graft to rebuild bone that has thinned, run longer still. Cost moves with all of it: how much bone you have, how many posts are needed, and whether the final restoration is a single crown or a bridge carried on two implants. Any figure quoted before a 3D scan and a clinical exam is an estimate, not a price.
Porcelain veneers and whitening cover the cosmetic side, and the two get discussed together because they answer different kinds of discoloration. Peroxide does well against the yellowing that arrives with age and against surface stain from coffee, tea and tobacco. It does much less for the grey banding left by childhood tetracycline, for a single tooth that darkened years after a root canal, and for the chalky white flecks of fluorosis, which can read as more obvious once the background around them lightens. Those belong to the veneer conversation rather than the bleaching one, and an exam should tell you which category your teeth fall into before you have spent anything.
The address, 114-1/2 Ashley Avenue, sits in the medical district within walking distance of MUSC and Roper Hospital, a few blocks from the Cannonborough-Elliotborough restaurants. That makes it genuinely convenient for hospital staff, students and peninsula residents on foot. Drivers face the usual downtown problem of narrow streets and metered spaces with no lot of its own. Hours run Monday through Thursday, 8am to 5pm, with nothing on Friday or the weekend, so visits have to fit a standard workweek.
A compact, long-established general practice in Charleston's medical district, run by Dr. Timothy Liptak since he took over the Ashley Avenue office in 2008. Implants, porcelain veneers and routine restorative work are handled in house, on a Monday-to-Thursday schedule that suits people who already work or study downtown.

I’ve been coming to this office for years. The dentist and his entire staff are fantastic. I’ve always given his name to our friends who were unhappy with their dentist. There is no rushing and time is taken to fully understand what to expect.
I look forward to seeing the staff and having a cleaning. They are top notch.
Dr. Liptak and his staff are exceptional. From the moment you walk in you are treated like family. They’re simply the best! Better than all the rest!
Dr. Liptak has been taking care of our teeth and family for over 10 years. Always available when needed. Highly recommend (we travel from an hour away since we moved).
i have been with dr. liptak since he first started his practice on ashley avenue and i have been completely delighted with his care and with his staff over these years- and no matter the reason for my visits i look always look forward to going to my dentist!
Thank you so Dr Liptak and your wonderful team. I broke a tooth and Dr Liptak took care of me every step of the way. He referred me to Dr Oliphant who placed the implant and did a wonderful job. Dr Liptak then seated crown after several months of healing. What could have been so distressing, was not at all due to the expert, professional and caring treatment of Dr Liptak. I really can’t thank him enough!!
Dr Liptak and his whole office staff are incredible. As I visit many places in my daily life, I'm struck at how the entire staff remembers you, be it 3 weeks or 3 years, they never miss a beat. I've had several root canals, crowns and bridges. Hands down, the very best work I've ever had done! If your current dentist is lacking in any area, I highly recommend call Tim's office. A+++!!
Dr. Liptak and his are staff are wonderful. They are always on time, friendly, gentle, and knowledgeable. I look forward to my teeth cleaning every 6 months. I recommend him and his practice to everyone even if they already have a dentist. I love going to the dentist, but I know some have fears or anxiety - make an appointment with this office!
