About Five Points Dental

Five Points Dental sits on 20th Street South in the Five Points South historic district, on the urban-core corridor that runs through one of Birmingham's oldest commercial-residential mixed neighborhoods. The patient base is the surrounding Five Points, Highland Park, and UAB-adjacent community — students, working professionals, longtime residents, and the medical-corridor employees who live nearby.

Routine fillings make up a regular share of the schedule. The team uses tooth-colored composite as the default material, with single-surface fillings for early-stage decay, multi-surface restorations on larger cases, replacement fillings when older work has failed, and the structural call between filling and crown when more tooth material has been lost. Beyond fillings, services include cleanings and exams, root canals, crowns and bridges, basic extractions, gum-disease screening, teeth whitening, and emergency dental care. They'll discuss anxiety-management options for patients who find the chair stressful — slower pacing, breaks during longer procedures.

If you've been postponing dental visits because the chair genuinely makes you anxious, a practice that takes that hesitation seriously is more useful than one that rushes through.

Patients searching for family dentist in Birmingham, general dentistry in Birmingham, AL, or general dentist near me in Birmingham who live in Five Points South, Highland Park, or downtown often weigh practices like this one for the urban-core proximity and the routine focus. Five Points Dental fits that pattern. The new-patient exam combines comprehensive radiographs, periodontal screening, and a treatment-plan walkthrough before any restorative work is scheduled. For Five Points and UAB-adjacent residents picking a regular general dental practice, this 20th Street South office is a reasonable first appointment. Bringing prior X-rays and treatment records from a previous dentist usually saves a redundant imaging round at the new-patient exam and gives the team baseline context to compare against current findings. Six-month recall scheduling is the strongest predictor of which patients catch problems early, and most practices will book the next visit before you leave the current one if you ask while you're checking out.

Is professional whitening better than over-the-counter strips?
They work on the same chemistry but not to the same standard. Strips use a weaker gel and depend on you placing them evenly, which is why results are often patchy near the gumline. In-office treatment uses a stronger gel with the gums shielded, giving a faster and more even change.
Will whitening work on crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening acts on natural enamel only, so crowns, veneers, and tooth-coloured fillings keep whatever shade they were made in. If you have visible dental work at the front, whitening the teeth around it can create a mismatch worth planning for in advance.
Are baby teeth worth treating if they fall out anyway?
Yes. Baby teeth hold the space that adult teeth need to come through into, and they matter for eating and speech. Untreated decay in a baby tooth can be painful, become infected, and affect the permanent tooth developing underneath.

Literally the best dentist and team ever!!! I found them after many years afraid to go to the dentist due to numerous traumas. They are so kind, knowledgeable and welcoming. I finally don't dread going to the dentist, or cry when I leave!!

Dr Garner was not forthcoming and really didn't explain the treatment plan to my satisfaction. He placed a new crown on a tooth that ALREADY had a crown. He knew my insurance was exhausted and put me in a position of having a temporary crown when he knew I'd need a root canal and my benefits were exhausted. The tooth was NOT hurting and there was no reason we couldn't have waited until three months when my benefits renewed. I was placed in the position of waiting bc the projected cost was over $3000! He didn't care about how this would affect me at all! He comes across as nice but he absolutely took advantage of my in this matter. Like most providers he's only interested in making money. He placed me in a bad position by having to stay in the temporary crown for so long. All he cared about was running up a bill. I will NEVER do business with him again and certainly wouldn't recommend him to anyone.

My experience has been great with this office. I was able to make my first appointment and fill out new patient paperwork online, which was already a plus because I was able to solely focus on my appointment on the day of. Everyone in the office is very personable, which definitely eases one’s nerves! Comprehensive testing was performed where Dr. Garner would have a detailed history of my teeth for my patient profile. Dr. Garner gave me a solid plan of care at the end of my appointment and made sure I understood everything by showing me my x-rays and explaining everything in great detail.

This is the best dental office I’ve ever been to. I HATE going to the dentist, but they made my experience so pleasant. Dee was amazing! She is so professional and personable!! Dr Garner is very kind. He came up with a plan to get my smile where I want it and explained everything in detail. The front desk was very kind as well! Highly recommend!

I’ve had nothing but great experiences at this dental office. All of the staff are welcoming, professional, and make you feel completely at ease from the moment you walk in. The dental hygienists are always friendly and do a thorough job. Dr. Garner takes the time to explain everything and answer any questions. I truly feel like they care about their patients. Highly recommend
