About Florida Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Florida Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a dental practice on West Azeele Street in the South Tampa area of Tampa, Florida. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward. No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most of the swelling and discomfort settles within about a week, with the first two or three days the most noticeable. Surgical removal of an impacted tooth generally takes longer to recover from than a simple extraction.
Why do dentists take X-rays?
Decay between teeth and problems below the gumline are invisible to the naked eye, so X-rays are what reveal them. Modern digital images use a low dose and are taken only when clinically justified.

I had a great experience with the office. I worked with Dr. Fowler for my surgery. I sought out a consultation for wisdom teeth removal and they were ready to schedule surgery the following week. They informed me of all the potential risks and what the plan would be. Surgery went well under anesthesia. Staff called me the next day to check and see how I was doing. I went in the following week for a check up and everything looked great. I’m still doing well even with some pain.

The team took the time to explain everything clearly and checked on me throughout the entire process, which really helped ease my nerves. You can tell they genuinely care about their patients, not just the procedure but your comfort and well-being too. I’m very grateful for the excellent care and customer service I received, and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing oral or maxillofacial surgery. Thanks again to DR Fowler and team. I loved my experience. From the moment you enter the office you are greeted with a room of nice smiles at the front desk. After a brief wait I was invited to the back for a with an X-Ray and chat about my pain with one of the associates. She was very sharp and personable. Dr. Charlotte then came in and after a thorough assessment she let me ask questions and gave me information about the procedure. The following day, I arrived to office and let them know I was nervous but their attitude and Dr. Charlotte’s wall of advanced degrees alleviated my nervousness. I was sat down in the operating chair, put under, and when I awoke after asking a few questions about the procedure I was helped out of the office. They sent a text an hour later checking on me which was greatly appreciated. As I type, I realize how invasive getting the procedure was but the entire team’s professionalism and skill made this a transformational experience. I highly recommend!
