About Florida Special Care Dentistry

Florida Special Care Dentistry is a dental practice on Davis Boulevard in the Davis Islands area of Tampa, Florida. Sedation dentistry uses inhaled, oral, or intravenous options to help patients relax through treatment, ranging from nitrous oxide for mild anxiety through to deeper sedation for longer or more involved procedures. It is commonly used for patients who have avoided the dentist for years due to fear.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. Frequently Asked Questions

Florida Special Care Dentistry is on Davis Boulevard in the Davis Islands area of Tampa, Florida (33606).
What days is Florida Special Care Dentistry open?

What services does Florida Special Care Dentistry offer?
Listed services at Florida Special Care Dentistry include Sedation Dentistry. The full list is shown on this page.
What sedation options are available at the dentist?
Commonly inhaled sedation, oral sedatives taken beforehand, and intravenous sedation for more involved cases. They differ in depth and in how long the effects last, so what is offered depends on the treatment and the practice.
Will I be unconscious under dental sedation?
Usually not. Most dental sedation leaves you conscious but deeply relaxed, often with little memory of the procedure afterward. General anaesthesia, where you are fully unconscious, is reserved for specific circumstances.
Why do dentists take X-rays?
Decay between teeth and problems below the gumline are invisible to the naked eye, so X-rays are what reveal them. Modern digital images use a low dose and are taken only when clinically justified.

The crew at Florida Special Care Dentistry is exceptional! Been going there for 20+ years--quality never wavers. Kind, considerate, professional, and caring. Dr. Dave is the best around! Kera was so patient during my daughter's recent surgery. She knew I was stressed so she explained everything to me (several times) and made sure I was set to take my daughter home. They consistently go above and beyond.

I recently visited this dental clinic and had a very positive experience. The staff was welcoming and professional from the moment I walked in, which helped ease any initial anxiety. The waiting area was clean and comfortable, and I was seen promptly at my scheduled appointment time. The dentist was thorough in explaining the procedure and took the time to answer all of my questions, which I really appreciated. Throughout the treatment, they made sure I was comfortable and informed about what was happening. The level of care and attention to detail was excellent. I was also impressed with the clinic’s cleanliness and adherence to hygiene standards. The equipment appeared modern and well-maintained, which gave me additional confidence in the quality of care. Overall, I am very satisfied with the service I received and would highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for reliable and professional dental care.

Wow! The care and attention this team gives is absolutely incredible! Life gets in the way and it had been awhile since my last cleaning. I have super sensitive teeth, so the numbing treatment for my teeth/gums made such a difference! My teeth are super clean and I was actually happy to book my next appointment in 6 months. Will never go anywhere else for dental care!

I just LOVE this Dental Practice. From the moment you walk in the door greeted by the best staff to the Dental Hygienist and especially the Doctors, everyone here is amazing! I always look forward to getting my teeth cleaned by an expert hygienist and Dr Matos is great with crowns! Couldn’t ask for a better experience.
