About Garlington Orthodontics: Mark Garlington, DDS

Garlington Orthodontics: Mark Garlington, DDS operates on East Abbeyfield Street in the Los Altos area of Long Beach, California. Clear aligners straighten teeth through a series of custom, removable trays, each worn for one to two weeks before moving to the next in the sequence. They suit mild to moderate crowding and spacing well, and are worn roughly twenty to twenty-two hours a day for treatment to stay on schedule.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts. Do clear aligners hurt?
There is usually pressure and mild tenderness for a day or two each time you move to a new aligner in the series. That sensation is the teeth moving, and it typically eases as you get through each stage.
Can clear aligners fix any orthodontic problem?
They handle mild to moderate crowding and spacing well. Complex bite corrections and large tooth movements are still often better suited to fixed braces, which is something an assessment will clarify.
What causes bad breath and can a dentist help?
Persistent bad breath most often comes from bacteria on the tongue and around the gumline, and gum disease is a frequent underlying cause. Because it is usually oral in origin, a dental examination is a sensible first step.

Dr Garlington is a true professional and was an expert in orthodontics. He also has a warm and inviting presence and has made their office feel like a small family. The staff is so sweet and they have little things that make your treatment fun - like different seasonal events, custom lip balms and different colored cases, etc. They have top notch tech to make it seamless and easy for you to scan your teeth and make sure you have accurate treatment plans as well. They even give you a special surprise celebration when you end your treatment! Overall, I loved my experience with them and would recommend them to anyone and everyone. I was always hesitant to get my Invisalign, but they made it so smooth, easy, convenient and fun! I was done in no time. Thank you so much for everything!

Went to Dr. Garlington's office for an invisalign consult. While I haven't yet started the invisalign process, I will say that his office staff are the friendliest people I've met in a long time. They seem genuinely happy to work there and are all very nice. Dr. Garlington specifically introduced himself to me, even though I didn't have an appointment with him specifically. I attribute this to Dr. Garlington's work ethos, and several of his staff confirmed that he and the office is a great place to work. That accounts for a lot in my book when judging a professional I want to work with. More when I start the invisalign treatment!
