About Hawaii Family Dental

Hawaii Family Dental is located on Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu, a central waterfront-adjacent location convenient for families across the surrounding neighborhoods. As the name suggests, family dental care is at the heart of the practice, which means the office is set up to see patients of every age, from a child's first checkup to the restorative work that becomes important later in life. General dentistry, with its routine cleanings, exams, and preventive treatment, keeps the whole household's maintenance on track and helps catch issues early. Because dental trouble seldom waits for a convenient moment, Hawaii Family Dental also offers emergency dentistry. For parents, that means a trusted office to call when a child knocks a tooth loose or an adult is sidelined by sudden pain, rather than scrambling for unfamiliar help during a tense situation. The practice rounds out its everyday care with cosmetic and restorative options. Teeth whitening and veneers give adults a way to brighten or reshape their smile, while dental implants provide a durable replacement for teeth lost to decay or injury. Keeping these treatments in-house lets a parent address their own cosmetic or restorative concerns at the same office where the kids come for cleanings, consolidating the family's care under one familiar team. A notable thread running through the offering is affordable dental care, which signals an office attentive to what families can manage financially. That focus, paired with a service mix spanning preventive, cosmetic, restorative, and emergency care, makes Hawaii Family Dental a practical choice for Honolulu households looking for one dependable place for everyone's needs. Rather than coordinating separate providers for children and adults, a family can rely on a single team that knows their history and can handle the routine visits, the occasional upgrade, and the urgent repairs as each member comes along through the years. For a family in central Honolulu, that single-roof, budget-aware arrangement quietly simplifies life, turning what might be several separate appointments across town into a coordinated set of visits with a team that already knows every member of the household.

On Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu, Hawaii Family Dental provides family-focused general dentistry with cosmetic veneers and whitening, dental implants, and emergency care, and lists affordable dental care among its offerings for households.

This rating is specifically for Laura, probably the best hygienist I’ve ever seen and that’s saying a lot as I have many friends who are hygienists and are very good. Laura is patient, has good instincts with what you are feeling (in my case when I’m drowning with water in the mouth) and had my teeth cleaned from many a tea stain. Laura’s great…

The staff and dentists are awesome! I’m not a fan of going to the dentist, but this team has a way of making me feel comfortable. Dr. Meredith and Dr. Sterling are great to have on my side as I’ve been dealing with a lot of issues with my teeth. Thanks HFD!

I have been a patient with HFDC for 4 decades. Within their staff of dentists I have always tried to find a dental team that is capable & skilled, yet patient & caring as well. My dentist, Dr. Taira, & her assistant Kelly fit that bill very well. They succeed at making each visit as smooth, fuss free & pain free as possible. After more than a year since my last visit I recently went in again for treatment & they greeted me with cheerfulness & surprisingly remembered my dental history, knew exactly what I needed & fixed it immediately. Mahalo to Dr. Taira, Kelly and the staff at Hawaii Family Dental Center!! I’m very grateful to have you in our Kakaako neighborhood!

TLDR; I had my wisdom teeth removed at HFD - Honolulu with Dr. Brett Sterling, and unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. However, the hygienists were wonderful — kind, attentive, and very caring. If you’re only looking for a routine cleaning, this office may meet your needs. --- I had my wisdom teeth removed at HFD - Honolulu with Dr. Brett Sterling, and unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. I was initially told my visit would be a consultation, but it unexpectedly turned into the extraction appointment. I was not mentally or practically prepared for surgery that day. I felt pressured to proceed, and while I trusted that this was a routine procedure for Dr. Sterling, I did not feel adequately informed or given time to consider my options. I also was not scheduled for a post-op appointment and was told to call only if complications arose. I was also asked to sign billing paperwork while the numbing injections were already taking effect, which made it difficult to ask questions or fully process what I was signing. After surgery, I was again asked if I had any questions, but by Dr. Sterling, when I was clearly not in a state to be able to ask any questions. About a week later, I was still experiencing significant pain and called to request a follow-up. I was told there may be a slight infection and to call back if the pain persisted to receive medication. I later learned through my records that Dr. Sterling did not actually believe I had an infection at that time. I wish this had been clearly communicated to me, as I was there specifically for his professional opinion and guidance — even if that guidance was simply to wait and monitor the situation. When my pain continued, I called again to request the prescription. I missed a return call, but despite calling back three additional times, I never received another response. At that point, I began looking for a different dentist. Aside from the extraction experience, even my initial new patient appointment felt rushed, with little to no explanation provided by my general dentist. However, the hygienists were wonderful — kind, attentive, and very caring. If you’re only looking for a routine cleaning, this office may meet your needs. However, my experience with more involved care (even with something as "normal" as wisdom teeth extraction) raised significant concerns about communication, follow-up, and care. I ultimately found a new dentist who diagnosed and has started treating me for what turned out to be an infected, pus-filled extraction site, on the side that I initially brought up to Dr. Sterling's attention. I’m grateful I sought out a different dentist who is absolutely caring and takes time for their patients. I will not be returning to HFD - Honolulu and I would encourage others to carefully consider their options and look for an individually owned practice where communication, transparency, and patient care are prioritized.

I’m sharing this after a lot of thought because I truly regret the care I received at this office. Over the course of multiple visits, I repeatedly brought up ongoing discomfort and concerns. Each time, I was reassured quickly, despite multiple X-rays being taken. What I was experiencing was consistently dismissed and explained away rather than thoroughly investigated. I trusted the dentists I saw here and assumed that if something serious were going on, it would be caught. Instead, my appointments felt rushed, my concerns minimized, and my questions brushed off. I was repeatedly told there was nothing to worry about, even as the issue continued to worsen. Eventually, I sought a second opinion elsewhere. The difference in care was immediate and honestly shocking. The problem was recognized right away and taken seriously, with clear explanations and no dismissal. It was upsetting to learn that something that could have been addressed earlier had been missed for so long. What bothers me most is not just that an issue was missed — it’s how quickly my concerns were dismissed visit after visit. Being told it was “sinus-related” without further investigation, despite imaging and ongoing symptoms, made me feel unheard and unsupported as a patient. Dental care requires trust, and once that trust is broken, it’s hard to get back. I’ve lost confidence in the accuracy and thoroughness of the care provided here and will not be returning. I strongly encourage anyone who feels their concerns are being minimized to advocate for themselves and seek a second opinion.
