About Heights Pediatric Dentistry

Heights Pediatric Dentistry operates on East Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard in the South Seminole Heights area of Tampa, Florida. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost. Modern digital X-rays use a very low dose and are taken only when there is a clinical reason. They show decay between teeth and problems with developing adult teeth that cannot be seen by looking.
When do children start losing baby teeth?
Usually from around age six, continuing until roughly age twelve, though the timing varies widely between children. Adult molars also come through at the back around age six without any baby tooth falling out first.
What happens during a routine dental examination?
The dentist checks the teeth for decay, examines the gums, looks at any existing fillings and crowns, and screens the soft tissues. X-rays are taken when there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth.

Heights Pediatric Dentistry is by far the most Amazing dentist office EVER. My son is 3 and has speech delays and they make every visit pleasant for him. They are so patient with him and very understanding to his needs. I’m always nervous when taking him to appointments because he can’t clearly communicate what he feels but the way they care for him puts my worries at ease. I would choose this office ten times over every time . I am so appreciative how great they make my little one feel.

Dr Carter is incredible- my son is very anxious and other dentists recommended general sedation. She has been able to do many treatments (long/intense ones too!) with only laughing gas without my son having any trouble. Much safer than general anesthesia! She was amazing with him every time, and the last time she saw him he didn't even need the laughing gas because shes just so good with him. As a parent she always talked to me before and after treating him, listened to what helps him and I trust her SO much.

Cannot recommend Dr Carter and her office enough! My 22 month old son had the BEST experience today for his first exam and cleaning. Everyone there was so nice and well equipped to handle toddler emotions. We will be back!

This is by FAR the best pediatric dentist I have ever taken my kids to. It’s an experience from the moment you walk in to the minute you leave, pure Luxury. My youngest son had to have a procedure done and I couldn’t afford to put him under at the moment so they offered to do it awake and we just gave it a try with our fingers crossed. But they made it so fun. He was so distracted that he didn’t even realize until it was completely done not one tier or one frown. My middle son asked when could he go back as if it was Chuck E. Cheese. This place is special and I’m so grateful our family found them.

They welcome you as soon as the doors open and make your child feel safe and special. Dr. Carter is so sweet and caring and very nurturing. 100 stars if I could. Absolutely love them.

We took our 2.5 yo for the first time. We had some tears, but that was expected. The staff and office space was amazing for littles! Everyone welcome us warmly and excitedly. Dr. Carter explained everything really well and was able to do our daughter’s full exam and cleaning, even with the tears. We learned helpful tips for good oral health and all left happy!
