About Island Family Dental

Island Family Dental is a general dentistry practice on Northeast 23rd Street in Vancouver, Washington, built to handle whatever comes through the door rather than one narrow specialty. A single office here might see a child's first cleaning in the morning and a parent's crown fitting by afternoon, which is the appeal for households that would rather not split care across several offices. You come here for the everyday work of keeping a mouth healthy, and for the less routine visit when something starts to hurt.

The service list covers the basics — cleanings, fillings for decayed teeth, and checkups aimed at catching gum disease before it affects the bone holding teeth in place — alongside more involved fixes: a crown to cap a tooth that's cracked or worn down, a bridge to fill the gap left by a missing tooth, or a root canal when decay has reached the nerve inside a tooth. Whitening and other cosmetic work sit on the same schedule as urgent, same-day problems, since a chipped tooth doesn't wait for a convenient week. Extractions come up too, usually as a last step after other options have been weighed rather than a first one.

If you're the kind of patient who's put off a cleaning because the last one uncovered something bigger, a practice that treats fillings, crowns, and root canals under one roof means the follow-up doesn't mean starting over somewhere new.

Cost is the question every patient asks first, and it depends on what the exam turns up — a cleaning and a root canal are not priced the same, and no listing can tell you which one you'll need before a dentist looks. What the service list suggests is a practice built for ongoing relationships rather than one-off visits: the same office that handles a filling this year is set up for the crown or bridge that might follow it. Island Family Dental reads less like a specialty clinic and more like a default option for a household in Vancouver that wants one place to call, whatever the tooth in question needs.

Island Family Dental on Northeast 23rd Street in Vancouver, Washington offers general and cosmetic care — cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, whitening, and emergency visits — for patients who want one practice to handle routine and urgent dental needs alike.

What services does Island Family Dental offer?

How do I know if I need a root canal?
Common signs are lingering pain after something hot or cold, pain when biting down, a tooth that darkens, or a persistent pimple-like spot on the gum. Diagnosis needs an examination and usually an X-ray, since these can point to other problems too.
What happens if I do not get a root canal?
The infection inside the tooth does not resolve by itself. It typically progresses to an abscess and can spread into surrounding bone, and the tooth is far more likely to be lost. Extraction becomes the alternative once the tooth cannot be saved.
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Pick the tooth up by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and get to a dentist quickly — the chances of saving it drop sharply after the first hour.

Dr Newkirk and her team are amazing. They are so kind and patient with me. I have severe anxiety with dental work and they are all very calm and kind. Doctor was highly recommended by a friend and she and her team helped me overcome my fear of dental work after a horrible experience I had at another office. I didn't have dental work done for 15 years until I came here. Everyone here is wonderful. I moved away from the area two years ago and I fly in from out of state to see them.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Lisa Newkirk for about five years, and she is truly amazing. At one point, my child — who goes to a different dentist — was told he needed a lot of dental work. It didn’t feel right, and we were worried some of it might not be necessary. I called Dr. Lisa and asked if she would be willing to review his X-rays and treatment plan to give us a second opinion. She kindly did it at no charge and even took the time to do a quick 10-minute exam of his teeth. That experience meant so much to me. I trust her completely and really appreciate that she takes a thoughtful, conservative approach when recommending treatment. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for an honest, caring dentist.

I’m not a fan of dental offices. I usually avoid them at all costs. Most recently it’s been a little over 2 years since i’ve been to a dentist. Shame, guilt and embarrassment always take over. I must say, I have never felt so comfortable or felt so heard from any provider, ever. From the Receptionist to the Dentist and everyone in between is so kind and so welcoming. You don’t come or go feeling ashamed or embarrassed. A+

I can’t say enough good things about this dental practice. From the moment I walked in, every single staff member has been incredibly kind, personable, and genuinely comforting. As someone who has a lot of dental anxiety, I’m used to bracing myself for each visit—but here, I actually feel at ease. They take the time to listen, explain things clearly, and check in throughout the appointment to make sure I’m comfortable. It’s the little things—like remembering my preferences or offering a gentle word when I need it—that make all the difference. I finally feel like I’ve found a place where I’m truly cared for, not just treated. Thank you for creating such a supportive and calming environment. You’ve turned what used to be a dreaded experience into something I no longer fear—and that means more than I can say.
