About Isom Endodontics- Dr. Terry Isom

Isom Endodontics- Dr. Terry Isom is a dental practice on Southeast Lake Road in Portland, Oregon. Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the space, and allows the natural tooth to be kept rather than extracted. Its reputation for being painful is largely outdated — carried out under local anaesthetic, it typically relieves pain rather than causing it.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward. Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Often yes, particularly on back teeth. A treated tooth loses internal structure and becomes more brittle, so a crown is usually recommended to protect it against fracture under chewing forces.
How many appointments does root canal treatment take?
It can sometimes be completed in one visit, though more complex teeth with several canals may need two. Which applies depends on the tooth involved and whether there is active infection to settle first.
Is it normal for teeth to be sensitive to cold?
Mild, brief sensitivity is common and often relates to exposed root surfaces or worn enamel. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold is removed is more significant and worth having examined, as it can indicate the nerve is involved.

Best place to get sedated, treated like a vip and felt like I was at a spa. The entire staff was excellent and very receptive to any and all questions or concerns. I highly recommend Isom Endodontics for any dental related work that you may need.

My experience was great overall. Dr Isom and the hygienist were personable and professional. The receptionist not so good. I thought she was talking on the phone when she was talking to me. No eye contact at all.

Dr. Isom did a great job of explaining my alternatives for a problem tooth. He was patient with me and answered all my questions directly. His staff was wonderfully courteous. The only downside of my visit was that I had to wait too long in the public area to be called in to see him.

I've been to this location several times in the past without issue but the last time was horrible. Terry comes off as overly confident to the point of pompousness. They demanded I pay before the procedure as I did but then charging me a second time after the procedure was done. My insurance notified me that they didnt attempt to use the insurance for several parts of the procedure and charged me the full amount. The office refused to contact the insurance further. I was told by Terry that one of my teeth could not be saved; I went to a different dentist a week later and they fixed that same tooth. Im not sure why people say he is extremely busy this was one of the least busy dentist offices I've been to.

Excellent care & followup! Dr Isom called me when I reported more pain than I expected. He provided a pain med that worked well, then called again the next day. It was nice to know Dr Isom cares enough about his patients by addressing issues with them personally instead of delegating. Excellent provider!

They got me in right away, quickly had a plan of action and completed my root canal swiftly and accurately. They went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable with a warm blanket and explained everything very clearly. Dr. Isom called me himself the following day to see how I was feeling a make sure I didn’t have questions. 💯 recommend this office! If I could more than 5 stars I would!
