About Ivis Alvarez DMD, Safari of Smiles

Ivis Alvarez DMD, Safari of Smiles provides dental care on Baymeadows Road East in the Deerwood area of Jacksonville, Florida. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less. They complete additional training focused on children — how teeth develop, how to manage anxiety and behaviour in the chair, and conditions specific to young patients. The practical difference is usually as much about handling the visit as the treatment itself.
How do I stop my child getting cavities?
Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, supervising until they have the dexterity to do it properly, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear during the day. Frequency of sugar matters more than the total amount.
What causes bad breath and can a dentist help?
Persistent bad breath most often comes from bacteria on the tongue and around the gumline, and gum disease is a frequent underlying cause. Because it is usually oral in origin, a dental examination is a sensible first step.

Dr. Alvarez and her staff are compassionate, thorough and patient oriented. You will not find a pediatric dentist that cares more about the child as a whole and places the child at the center of their dental care. She does not make any decisions without involving the parents and reviewing all options. I can not recommend her enough.

Dr Alvarez put my heart at ease with her care for my 10 yr old after a very disappointing experience at another office that resulted in my daughter needing a root canal. Dr Alvarez takes the time to actually sit down with you and explain what’s happening and the solution(s). She gave me and my child time to ask as much as we want before any procedure and/or after. Needless to say, she’ll be coming here until she turns 18.

I can’t recommend this office enough! The dentist is absolutely amazing, and the entire staff is so kind, caring, and welcoming. They always make us feel comfortable from the moment we walk in. She placed crowns on my baby’s teeth because of severe cavities, and the results have been perfect. The work she did is beautiful, and we’ve had such a great experience throughout the entire process. She is patient, gentle, and truly cares about her little patients. We are so grateful for the excellent care our son has received. Thank you for everything!

“If the Tooth Fairy ever needed a day off, Dr. Alvarez would be her first call. She doesn’t just ‘work on kids’ teeth’—she steps right into their world, whether that means talking about dinosaurs, princesses, or what snack they’re hoping to score after their appointment. My child walked in nervous and walked out smiling (and not just because of the prize box). She’s patient, compassionate, and somehow manages to win over both kids and parents without bribing either group with stickers… though she could if she wanted to. Highly recommend for anyone who wants their kid to actually look forward to the dentist.”

We had such a great experience at this pediatric dental office. The staff was kind, patient, and very thorough. Everything was explained clearly to me, and I really appreciated that they took the time to go over every detail without rushing. It made the whole visit feel comfortable and stress-free for both me and my son. Highly recommend!

My 4 year old daughter's first Dentist appt. Our scheduled time was at 1pm. Got there 15 minutes early and the door was locked. They didn't unlock the door until 1:05pm. Said they were in meeting. Everyone was very nice and helpful. Very kid friendly. Let you watch your child on video with the iPad while they were in the room with the dental assistant and doctor. Journee had a great first dental experience. I definitely would recommend this place for you pediatric dental needs. My daughter is now 11 and she still gets the same treatment as she did her very first visit. Dr. Alvarez is very warm and friendly. You can tell that she really cares about and loves her babies, people and her profession. Dr. Alvarez is still a wonderful Dentist. My daughter is now 12 and we both still love coming here. She also advocates for her patients and gives very good advice. She recently told my daughter if she has any questions about what is happening to her during her dental appointments to to always ask questions and make sure that she advocates and stand up for herself because if you don't someone else will.

My mother in law recommended Safari of Smiles for our first dentist experience, and we enjoyed several visits: kid-focused and parent-supportive. Later on, I tried Great Expressions, where the dentist never spoke with me, but my girls returned to waiting room, sharing the devastating news of 8 cavities and 5 cavities, so I decided to return to Safari of Smiles for second opinion. When my kids found out we planned to return to that “animal place,” they were so excited! Instead of 8 cavities, it’s 3 that require fillings, with an additional 2 that are beginning to form but can be treated with Curodont, to reverse and heal teeth. And instead of 5 cavities plus a crown, it’s 2 that requires fillings, no crown needed since it’s not too close to nerve. I’m so thankful for Dr Alvarez, who carefully re-examined my girls, reviewed x-rays, and thoroughly discussed recommendations with me, offering options and priorities if I needed to schedule multiple appointments, then giving me time and space to pray/discuss with husband over the phone. She has a gift from God for honestly advocating for kids and parents.

Dr. Alvarez not only looks out for her patients but she also finds a way to comfort the parents while we wait in the lobby. I’ve been coming here since 2021 and I wouldn’t trade her for the world. Her staff is always kind and professional, the place is always clean & the environment is top notch for all kid ages. I appreciate the time and effort they take to give phenomenal medical care. Thank you again!
