James Island begins at the Wappoo Cut drawbridge, and Wappoo Creek Drive is among the first turns off Folly Road once you are across. For anyone living on the island, in Riverland Terrace, or out along the road toward Folly Beach, it is genuinely close. From the peninsula it is a ten-minute run down Folly Road once you clear the Ashley River. The schedule is unusual and worth reading before you call: Monday runs late, ten in the morning until six in the evening with a midday break; Tuesday through Thursday open at eight and close at five with an hour off at one; Friday is a half day.
Three dentists share the practice. Dr. L. Thomas Weir has been in practice since 1988, Dr. James H. Thomas III joined in 2003, and Dr. John Beaty came aboard in 2025, which is why the range of work kept in house is wider than a solo office usually manages. Gum disease treatment is a real strength here: the office runs a Periolase laser for the LANAP protocol, a surgical technique using a specific laser wavelength to clear diseased tissue from a periodontal pocket without cutting and suturing a flap. It is not a substitute for maintenance cleanings afterwards, and it does not regrow lost bone on demand, but it spares many patients the recovery of conventional gum surgery. Gum grafting and bone grafting are also performed.
Implants are planned on cone-beam CT, which produces a three-dimensional volume of the jaw rather than the flattened picture a standard radiograph gives, the difference between estimating bone depth and measuring it. CEREC allows a crown to be designed, milled and cemented in one visit instead of two, provided enough tooth structure remains to support it. Bridges, dentures and partials, porcelain restorations, root canals and wisdom tooth extractions round out the restorative side.
Everyday care has not been crowded out by any of this. Children are seen, cleanings and preventive visits form the backbone of the book, and emergencies are worked in. Whitening, veneers and tooth straightening cover the cosmetic requests, and patients who stopped booking years ago because dentistry frightened them can be treated under sedation.

I met Dr. Weir as a professor at MUSC dental school. I went to his office for a general visit after bone grafts. He preformed the most through dental/ mouth exam I have ever had in my life. They are kind and empathetic to any fears and always allow me to express these fears. He and his partners are well educated in new research and practice of dentistry. I had two Very painful infections. Dr Weir did two root canals within a couple of weeks of each other. They were painless and effective. The staff was very courteous. I wouldn’t want anyone to ever take care of my dental needs except James Island or Johns Island dental practice. Dr. Weir is terrific.
Dr Thomas has been dentist for years & I would follow him anywhere. I have never had a bad experience there. I go every 6 months for a cleaning & the technicians are always very caring & gentle.

I'm new to this practice, but they are definitely my go-to dentist of choice now! Dr. Weir is a highly skilled professional with a sense of humor that goes a long way when you're in a dentist's chair. He took the time to thoroughly go over an upcoming procedure that I was somewhat anxious about and laid my concerns to rest. The staff is courteous, the wait time is short and my new favorite hygienist, Rosemary, is one of the best that's ever been in my mouth. Oh, and they offer same-day crowns in case that service is needed. Five stars for JIDA!
I am having a really great experience at James Island Dental Associates. Dr. Thomas is amazing—he’s super skilled, takes his time, and makes sure everything turns out just the way you want it. You can tell he really cares about doing a great job and pays attention to all the little details. The whole staff is friendly, welcoming, and easy to work with. Everyone is so helpful and caring, and they really make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. From the beginning Martres was amazing, super knowledgeable, and walked me through the whole process. Brittany was an absolute delight calling her everyday to make payments because my bank wanted to make things difficult. Anna is probably the sweetest person I’ve ever met, and instantly made my anxiety feel at ease. Dr Thomas really hit the gold mind when hiring his staff because truly the entire staff is wonderful, and I can’t recommend this dental office enough!
