About LowCountry Kids Pediatric Dentistry LLC
Babies with a single tooth, grade-schoolers due for a filling, and teenagers who have outgrown cartoon murals all end up in the same small practice at 652 Coleman Boulevard. LowCountry Kids treats children from infancy through adolescence, and it is a genuinely local operation — Dr. Laura Shapiro grew up on James Island and went to school at Porter-Gaud before leaving for dental training and returning to practice a few miles from where she started.
Children are a different clinical population mainly because they cannot report their own symptoms reliably. A three-year-old with an abscessed molar will often point to the wrong side of the mouth, or say nothing at all and simply stop chewing on one side; a seven-year-old will insist nothing hurts right up until it does. Shapiro completed a two-year pediatric residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia in 2011 and was certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 2012 — training built specifically around growth, behavior in the chair, and reading patients who cannot describe what is wrong.
Much of the work is developmental rather than restorative, and timing is the substance of it. A first visit around the first birthday, a check of eruption sequence as baby teeth give way, and an orthodontic screening around age seven, which is early enough to catch a crossbite or a crowding pattern while the jaw is still growing and can be guided rather than corrected later. Prevention helps but does not immunize: sealants and fluoride lower risk substantially, and neither one offsets a nightly bottle or constant grazing on juice.
The office runs Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:00am to 5:00pm and Wednesday from 8:00am to 3:30pm, with no Friday clinic — so a Friday injury is worth a phone call early rather than a wait until Monday. Coleman Boulevard puts the practice close to Shem Creek and a short run from the Ravenel Bridge, which is convenient for the Old Village, Sullivan's Island, and Isle of Palms. From Park West or Carolina Park it is a longer drive up Highway 17.
Dr. Laura Shapiro, board certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, runs this Mount Pleasant practice on Coleman Boulevard for children from infancy through adolescence. Prevention, eruption tracking, and early orthodontic screening anchor the care. The office is open Monday through Thursday and closed Fridays, sitting close to Shem Creek and a short run from the Ravenel Bridge.

Dr Baker and her team are the greatest with kids especially special needs kids. But they also see adults which is amazing. We have been coming here about 13 years.
Great care. Dr Shapiro is excellent. She and the staff were great with the kids.
Dr. Laura and her staff were wonderful with our kids! The entire office space is made for children to feel reassured and comfortable.
Dr. Laura and her staff are fantastic. Professional, hygienic, punctual and truly kid-friendly. Our 3 year old daughter looks forward to her dental exams!
We had the best experience with Dr. Laura at LowCountry Kids! She was gentle and made my toddler feel so comfortable. We're very happy we had such a good first dentist visit!
We love dr. Laura and her entire office! She is kind, patient and thorough! One of my sons had 4 teeth extracted without one tear. The office is clean and bright and they have TVs to distract your kids from the cleaning (or tooth extractions!). I highly recommend her!
We LOVE Dr Laura and her whole staff. This is a fantastic dental practice catering to children. My kids absolutely adore Dr. Laura and actually look forward to visiting the dentist! They think her word is Bible and my oldest daughter will always make reference to Dr L, saying how proud she is going to be by her brushing and flossing. She even got my kids to eat vegetables! Dr Laura is extremely warm, kind, compassionate and overall just great with children. The office is extremely clean and inviting for children. Can't recommend this practice enough!
We love Dr. Laura! She and her staff are friendly, gentle, and reassuring. The office environment is very clean and kid-friendly. Could not ask for a better experience -- quick and painless for all. We're looking forward to coming back again next time!
