About Magic Smiles

Magic Smiles is a dental practice on Northeast Halsey Street in the Hazelwood area of Portland, Oregon. Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems using braces, clear aligners, or similar appliances over a period that commonly runs from about a year to several years depending on the case. It is offered to both children, where early evaluation can catch developing issues, and adults at any age.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. Post-braces, I needed to get a bonded retainer for my lower front teeth to preserve their position. I found Magic Smiles and very glad I did! I had a great consultation with Morgan, with x-rays and digital impressions taken, and I was also able to set up a payment plan. I'm super happy with the bonded retainer, and it was just what I was looking for! The wire gauge is small, contoured, and smoothly bonded to my teeth, so eating and talking is comfortable. Fits like a glove! Heather did a wonderful job :) Dr. Sara Edmondson and team were informative and answered all my questions with care, and followed up with me to make sure I was happy with the results. I highly recommend this clinic. Thank you for helping me preserve my smile! :D

I can’t recommend Magic Smiles Orthodontics enough! Everyone is so friendly, helpful and respectful. I have 2 kids in braces right now so we have to come to appointments frequently and I have to say I actually look forward to going in to see the staff (sounds crazy but true!!). The waiting room has the coziest soft oversized chairs to wait in and they offer fun raffles and giveaways to kids. One spring both my kids names were drawn for teacher appreciation week so they delivered cookies and a gift card to each of their favorite teacher, one at the middle and one at the elementary school! What a cool thing to do! The orthodontist assistant Courtney has worked with my kids the most and we love her! She always remembers things about them and makes them feel super comfortable. Thank you for making their appointments a pleasant experience for them! Dr. Sarah is wonderful too! She does a great job communicating with me after each appointment by coming out and giving me updates. She is warm and kind and so professional. Thank you Magic Smiles staff, you guys are the best!

The staff for nice and friendly, and they gave you tokens to keep track of your orthodontic progress. If you kept all of them and returned them back after your visit, you get nice little rewards, including sweets, and treats that you may not have been able to enjoy while wearing braces!

Best experience I’ve ever had. I had my first brace put on with little to no discomfort at all. Dr. Sarah was knowledgeable for my complicated case. Courtney was extremely kind and helpful. She guided me throughout the whole process. I have never had such gentle dental care. Overall just a very pleasant experience here. Warm ,welcoming environment with wonderful staff. Would definitely recommend others to check out this place. 5 out of 5.

We are so grateful to have found Magic Smiles and Dr. Sara! Absolutely everyone there from the front desk staff, to the assistants, to the orthodontist Dr. Sara, are not only extremely knowledgeable and professional, but they are also exceptionally kind and happy! This sounds a bit odd, but my son and I both find every visit uplifting: they are just a joy to be around and make the entire process easier and more fun: they have office games and prizes, and fun incentives for the kids. My son has broken off a bracket or two, and they’ve been excellent about getting us in as soon as possible, and never making my son feel bad, but working with him to figure out what happened and then coming up with a plan to prevent it. I always do my background research, and I cannot tell you how many orthodontic offices we visited before deciding to go with Magic Smiles and Dr. Sara. We initially thought they were in our insurance network, but we were so impressed by their treatment plan, that when we found out they were outside our network, we decided to go with them anyway! They use all the best and most up-to-date orthodontic tools and practices, including Damon braces, which are more expensive for them, but yield faster, better results for patients with less office visits. Damon braces don’t require the little elastic bands to go on the individual brackets, allowing the wire to move the teeth in a gentler more 3-D fashion, this results in less strain on the teeth, less bacterial buildup, and often a broader smile. Office visits for regular twin brackets are usually every 4-6 weeks, with the self ligating brackets in Damon braces you only have to go in every 9-12 weeks- that ends up being a lot less school and work missed over a 1 to 3 year treatment plan! Seriously, do your homework before you sign up with any orthodontist, there are definitely some practitioners in this town offering outdated, more painful, more expensive and less efficient methods. The photos below show where we started, 4 days in, 10 days and then 1 month. There was a lot of work to be done, the initial changes were huge and fast, and after that it becomes more fine-tuning, but it’s been amazing to see my child’s smile transform! We could not be happier with our decision to go with Magic Smiles orthodontics!
