About Matthew T. Waite, DDS

Matthew T. Waite, DDS operates on North Howard Avenue in the North Hyde Park area of Tampa, Florida. Periodontics is the specialty focused on the gums and the bone supporting the teeth, handling more advanced gum disease, related surgical treatment, and — in many practices — dental implant placement, which sits naturally alongside that training.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost. Use this page to find contact information for Matthew T. What is gum recession and can it be treated?
Recession is when gum tissue pulls back and exposes more of the tooth root, often from aggressive brushing, gum disease, or grinding. Grafting procedures can cover exposed roots, though how well that works depends on the extent of the recession.
When should I see a periodontist instead of a general dentist?
Usually on referral, when gum disease has advanced beyond what routine treatment is resolving — deep pockets, ongoing bone loss, or gum recession needing surgical management.
What happens during a routine dental examination?
The dentist checks the teeth for decay, examines the gums, looks at any existing fillings and crowns, and screens the soft tissues. X-rays are taken when there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth.

I want to take a moment to share my outstanding experience with Dr. Waite and his team. For years, I carried an enormous amount of anxiety about getting dental implants. Several general dentists told me the only way forward would be to go through another full round of braces, since my orthodontist hadn’t left enough space the first time for the posts to be placed. The thought of braces all over again, along with the cost and time involved, was overwhelming. When I met with Dr. Waite, everything changed. He recognized that the space was tight, but instead of telling me braces were my only option, he had the confidence in his skills to place the post correctly without putting me through another round of orthodontics. His reassurance and confidence immediately put me at ease. He saved me not only a huge amount of money, but also years of additional treatment and stress. Years later, I still think about that experience with gratitude. The implants have been perfect from day one — I’ve had zero problems, and it feels completely natural. What I remember most is how comfortable and cared for I felt throughout the entire process. He even took the time to call me and personally check up on me. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Waite and his associates to anyone in need of implants. Their professionalism, compassion, and expertise truly make all the difference. Thank you Dr. Waite!!! You have changed my life! (:

I want to share my recent experience at the orthodontics office associated with Dr. Waite, specifically to offer a word of caution to potential patients. While I did not see Dr. Waite himself, my appointment was with one of his substitute practitioners, and I sincerely recommend avoiding this office at all costs. My journey began when I needed to resume my Invisalign treatment, and the orthodontics office suggested three periodontists, including Dr. Waite. As luck would have it, there was an opening, so I scheduled an appointment. The individual I met was a petite Hispanic female whose name I unfortunately could not catch due to her accent. In hindsight, I should have asked her to repeat it, but after several attempts, I felt uncomfortable pushing further. However, what followed was disheartening. This practitioner was not only unprofessional but also displayed an alarming level of arrogance during our consultation. Rather than offering support and guidance for my dental work, her approach seemed focused on undermining my dental health, which left me feeling quite anxious about my care. After this unsettling experience, I reached out to the office to express my concerns, but instead of receiving any constructive feedback, I encountered a so-called "Office Manager" who attempted to gaslight me. This dismissive response only compounded my disappointment, as I genuinely wanted to bring attention to what I perceived as concerning behavior. While I want to emphasize that my negative experience stemmed from one of Dr. Waite's substitutes and not Dr. Waite himself, I feel it is crucial to make others aware of my circumstances. If you decide to visit this office, please be vigilant about the staff, particularly in case you happen to encounter a petite Hispanic female practitioner. Again, I want to clarify that my intent is not to profile anyone based on ethnicity; I myself belong to a minority community and have Hispanic family members. It's simply a cautionary note to help others avoid the same frustrating ordeal I faced. I hope my story encourages prospective patients to think carefully before proceeding with their dental needs at this location. Address: 330 East Bloomingdale Ave. Brandon, FL 33511 Take care and best of luck on your dental journeys.

Dr. Waite, his dental assistant, and staff are excellent. Not only is the office impeccable but so is the care and the expertise of Dr. Waite to do exceptional work. I had two extractions, bone graft, and implant and the experience was without pain. At the end there were perks like an almond chocolate banana milkshake and a call that night by Dr. Waite as a follow up on the procedure. Once you find the best- why go anywhere else.

Dr. Waite and his team members are truly a class act. They are considerate, compassionate, and really good at what they do. I feel so blessed to have been referred to them for the procedures behind me, and for what still lies ahead. The office is really clean and it is such a calming environment, with smiles coming from anyone I encountered. You will be in the absolute best of hand’s with Dr. Waite (Tampa Bay Periodontics).

A painful broken tooth left me in a panic to find a dentist who could help ease the pain and calm my anxiety. A close friend that knows my past dental nightmares insisted that I see Dr. Waite. She said that he was the absolute best and insured me I would be well cared for. Well, she was right. I can’t say enough about the way Dr. Waite and his amazing staff cared for me. They were gentle, kind, and always available to answer any of my questions 24/7. Dr. Waite gave me his personal cell number to call in case I needed help after office hours. He called me after surgery to make sure I was comfortable and even provided homeopathic supplements for swelling and it worked! His assistant Jen went above and beyond to help with insurance paperwork and appointment times and dates around my hectic work schedule. It feels great to be able to schedule appointments at a dentist office and feel peace instead of panic. Thanks Dr. Waite!
