About McDonald Orthodontics - Salem Office

McDonald Orthodontics - Salem Office is a dental practice on West Nob Hill Street Southeast in the South Central area of Salem, Oregon. Traditional braces use brackets and wires to gradually move teeth into alignment, handling complex bite corrections and significant crowding more predictably than removable alternatives. Treatment commonly runs one to three years, with a retainer worn afterward to hold the result.

Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems using braces, clear aligners, or similar appliances over a period that commonly runs from about a year to several years depending on the case. It is offered to both children, where early evaluation can catch developing issues, and adults at any age.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts. What age is best for braces?
Assessment around age seven is often suggested so developing problems can be spotted, though treatment itself usually starts later once enough adult teeth are through. Adults can be treated at any age provided the gums and bone are healthy.
Will I need a retainer after braces?
Yes, and indefinitely in some form. Teeth have a persistent tendency to drift back toward their original positions, and retainers are what prevent years of treatment from gradually undoing itself.
Is orthodontic treatment only for children?
No. Adults make up a substantial share of orthodontic patients, and teeth can be moved at any age provided the gums and supporting bone are healthy.

Dr. McDonald is fantastic! I had Invisalign treatment while our 3 kids had braces done with this office and have been nothing short of pleased with doctor McDonald and his staff. He worked together with my dentist to create a plan that worked best for me. I feel like he goes above and beyond what most dental professionals would do for their patients. Can’t recommend this clinic enough!

We've been seeing Dr. McDonald for a couple years now, checking our daughter's growth and natural movement of teeth. Dr. McDonald has been very straightforward in presenting treatment options appropriate for our daughter's particular situation. The time has come to start treatment and I'm confident we chose the best path based on Dr. McDonald's professional opinion. All of the staff have been friendly and responsive to our needs - exceeding our expectations. I encourage anyone looking for orthodontic services to schedule a consultation with Dr. McDonald before signing a contract with any orthodontist.

Looking for a place to get adult braces? Look no further! I am 25 years old with a upper narrow bite and I had went to many orthodontist consultations in the Salem/Keizer area before finally choosing my man Dr. McDonald/his amazingly wonderful staff that I just look forward to seeing every appointment. Also my girlfriend and her sister got work done when they were younger and they still have the most beautiful smiles to this day. He was the only one in the area that can do the maxillary expander without having to go all the way to Portland and my dentist even recommended him (Salem Family Cosmetic Dentistry) and I couldn’t ask for a more smoother procedure. Really took good care of me and made sure I was comfortable through the whole thing. At the end of the Maxillary procedure, I left in tears of joy because I knew I was in great hands going forward. *Also you don’t have to get the EXPANDER* everyone is different but I definitely would recommend it if you’re like me. No pain, no gain! I’m only 10 months in the process and the work that has been done already, leaves me smiling more and more each day. It was worth every crank! Now that the beginning part is over, it’s smooth sailing from here and look forward to getting the expander taken out soon!😉 I really can’t thank you enough doc if you’re reading this. You’ve changed my life because my smile was the one thing that made me so self conscious. Also thank you to the staff as well for making me feel right at home every visit.💙 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I love smiling now!😁
