About Nelson Orthodontics
Nelson Orthodontics is a dental practice on Valleygate Drive in the Terry Sanford area of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and corrects bite problems using braces, clear aligners, or similar appliances over a period that commonly runs from about a year to several years depending on the case. It is offered to both children, where early evaluation can catch developing issues, and adults at any age.
A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.
Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.
Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.
Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.
Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment. Wonderful office. Great staff.
Top notch service! The team is as quick and efficient as possible for an orthodontist office. Dr. Nelson is great, except for being a Cowboys' fan (joke). The staff is professional and courteous; I'd definitely recommend to anyone.
i am extremely disappointed to once again have to address dr. nelson’s bedside manner during my recent appointment. this is not the first time i have left feeling frustrated and disrespected, and unfortunately, this experience was no different. from the moment the appointment began, dr. nelson’s tone came across as dismissive and condescending. rather than feeling heard or supported as a patient, i felt as though my concerns were minimized and not taken seriously. there was little effort made to create a comfortable or respectful environment, which is something every patient deserves when seeking medical care. what was most concerning was the way i was spoken to throughout the visit. as a grown woman, i should not feel like i am being talked down to or treated as if i lack understanding of my own health. the communication style used felt more like a lecture than a collaborative discussion about my care. this approach not only undermines patient confidence but also makes it difficult to openly share concerns or ask questions. healthcare appointments can already be stressful, and bedside manner plays a critical role in building trust between provider and patient. unfortunately, dr. nelson’s approach continues to create the opposite effect. it leaves me feeling uncomfortable, unheard, and reluctant to return. if it were possible to receive treatment elsewhere, i absolutely would. however, given my current limitations, i feel stuck in a situation where i am not receiving the level of respect and professionalism that should be standard in any medical setting. i sincerely hope this feedback is taken seriously and that changes are made. patients deserve to feel respected, valued, and included in conversations about their own care—not dismissed or spoken down to.
I've only been here a couple times so I'm not really sure how to rate just yet. We had to come to the Fayetteville office, due to construction at the Raeford office. But I'll start by saying that I don't like that parents aren't allowed to go back with their small children. Especially on their first day getting braces. I'm sure it's scary and possibly painful for them. They should be allowed a parent's presence for support. I also find it ridiculous that they don't have a designated area to speak with parents privately after giving a service. They give their follow up right in the middle of the lobby. It's weird and a violation of patient privacy. I also agree with other reviews that I've seen that the orthodontist has an off putting attitude. I won't say it's a bad attitude but it's definitely not welcoming or friendly. He seems to have better things you do.
Great visit! The Dr Chauncey and his staff is always pleasant informative and helpful. I have never had a bad experience there
Public Review: Nelson Orthodontics – Deeply Troubled by Discriminatory and Unethical Behavior I do not take public reviews lightly, especially when they involve personal legal matters. However, I believe it is my duty to inform the community—particularly minority families—about an alarming and ongoing issue we’ve experienced at Nelson Orthodontics. During our legally scheduled visitation week, we brought our daughter to her orthodontic appointment at this clinic. Unexpectedly, we were met by the child’s biological mother, despite the fact that we are currently involved in a highly sensitive custody dispute. Her presence was unannounced and inappropriate given the legal status of our visitation. The biological father, who holds joint custody and legal authority over medical decisions, identified himself to the front office staff. He explained the situation and our intent to leave peacefully due to the unexpected and hostile presence of the other party. As we exited the building, two staff members approached us in the parking lot and urged us to leave quickly, stating that the woman upstairs had already called the police and they did not want a scene. Let me be clear: we are Pakistani-Indian U.S. citizens and were fully compliant, calm, and civil throughout the entire interaction—which we have documented via video recording. Despite this, moments later, we were met with an overwhelming police response. We were forced to the ground in front of our daughter, accused of abduction and of being armed—allegations that were not only baseless but deeply traumatic to our child and ourselves. Upon showing our video evidence, police confirmed that a false report had been made, allegedly from someone inside Nelson Orthodontics, claiming we entered the office, snatched the child, and fled. This claim is completely fabricated. It is important to note that this is not an isolated incident. The staff at Nelson Orthodontics have previously involved themselves in this custody matter, despite not being legal parties. Just days after the appointment and incident, they contacted the biological father and informed him that he and his wife were banned from the clinic and that if the child’s biological mother scheduled future appointments, our presence would constitute trespassing. This is a gross overreach, especially given the father's standing legal rights regarding medical care. For full transparency, the biological mother is a 911 dispatcher, which further raises serious concerns regarding misuse of authority and potential manipulation of emergency services. We believe this connection contributed to the swift and extreme police response we faced—without cause. This entire situation reflects a troubling pattern of bias, overreach, and possibly discriminatory profiling. The clinic’s decision to act on one party’s claims—without verifying custody documentation or ensuring a balanced approach—led to a dangerous and traumatizing outcome for a legal guardian and his child. We are sharing this experience not out of bitterness, but to warn other families—especially minorities and those in sensitive legal situations—that this clinic may not act in your best interest. No healthcare provider should take sides in custody matters, falsely involve law enforcement, or escalate situations based on assumptions. We are currently pursuing all appropriate legal remedies, including submitting complaints to the relevant regulatory and civil rights agencies. Healthcare professionals are expected to uphold ethical standards—not contribute to the emotional and legal harm of children and families under their care. Proceed with caution. Namaste 🙏🏽 Also pictured are the two staff members that had involved themselves. They would not provide their names. Investigation will release that here soon. This was the lady at the receptionist desk and her maintenance man muscle named Kyle.
