About Northbridge Dental -James J. Richart, DMD

What keeps people from booking a checkup is usually the clock rather than the drill. Northbridge Dental answers that with an unusual week: Monday and Wednesday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Tuesday running from 1:00pm through to 7:00pm, and Thursday mornings only, 9:00am to 1:00pm. The Tuesday evening block is the useful one, because it lets a cleaning or a single filling happen without negotiating time off. The bread and butter is what you would expect from a small general office — exams, hygiene, tooth-colored fillings, crowns, and the unglamorous maintenance that stops small problems from turning into root canals.

Dr. James J. Richart, DMD, a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, has run this West Ashley practice since 2001 and describes its focus as restorative and cosmetic. A long-running solo office carries a specific trade-off. In its favor: continuity, because the same dentist who watched a hairline crack for four years is the one deciding when it finally needs a crown, and nothing gets lost between rotating associates. Against it: scope. Impacted wisdom teeth, implant placement, gum grafting and full orthodontic correction generally route out to specialists downtown or up Highway 17. That is normal rather than a shortcoming — the question worth asking at a first visit is which parts of a plan happen here and which get referred, so the timeline and the total cost are clear from the start.

Most of the decisions in an office like this are restorative rather than cosmetic, and the one that comes round most often is what to do with a molar that has been filled and refilled until there is more composite in it than tooth. A large filling sits inside the tooth and lets the remaining walls flex every time you bite down, which is how a cusp eventually fractures — sometimes below the gumline, where nothing can be saved. A crown or an onlay caps the tooth instead and carries the load across it rather than through it. The trade is genuine: more cost, an extra appointment, and sound enamel removed to make room. The honest way to frame it is which failure you would rather live with, over what horizon, on a tooth you have already paid to repair twice.

Northbridge Drive is a quiet side address in the 29407 half of West Ashley, near the Ashley River Road corridor and the bridges into the peninsula. It is an easy stop for West Ashley residents and for downtown workers heading home westbound, particularly on that late Tuesday. Patients driving in from Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island or Summerville will find the trip longer than the map suggests at rush hour.

A long-running solo general practice on Northbridge Drive in West Ashley, focused on restorative and cosmetic work such as fillings, crowns, bonding, veneers and whitening, with Tuesday hours that run until 7:00pm for patients who cannot take time off during the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a dental appointment after work in West Ashley?
Tuesdays here run from 1:00pm until 7:00pm, the latest slot on this office's schedule and the one that fills first for patients with standard office jobs. Monday and Wednesday are 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Thursday closes at 1:00pm. There are no Friday or weekend hours. Book a longer procedure for a day you can leave work early rather than assuming an evening slot will be open.
How long does tooth-colored bonding on a front tooth last?
Typically four to seven years before it needs attention, and it usually goes dull rather than falling off. Composite is slightly porous, so the margin where it meets enamel picks up color from coffee, tea and red wine until it starts to outline the repair. A polish at a hygiene visit recovers a good deal of that. When polishing stops working, the old composite is taken off and rebuilt in the chair.
Does this office handle wisdom teeth and implant surgery?
The practice describes its focus as restorative and cosmetic dentistry, which in a solo general office typically means fillings, crowns, bonding, veneers and whitening rather than oral surgery. Impacted wisdom teeth, implant placement and gum grafting are commonly referred to specialists elsewhere in Charleston. Ask at your first visit which procedures stay in-house, because it changes how many separate appointments and separate bills a full plan involves.

We recommend Northbridge Dental very highly. We’ve been going there for years and we always look forward to our next visit. We love the Northbridge crew! We love them so much we go four times a year (every three months) for a gentle and pain-free cleaning. They are very caring and alway do a fantastic job of getting our teeth clean. They also inspect for any problems with teeth, gums, glands, or lips. We value our dental hygiene and we floss, brush, scrape, swish and gargle more than once everyday. A visit to Northbridge is an important part of our plan and they help us keep on top of things. A trip to Northbridge makes for happy teeth and gums!

The dental hygienist, a mom and longtime W Ashley resident, whose name eludes me now, not only knows the area but also her way around a mouth. She could have taken the easy route and left certain back parts caked in tartar, but she took the high road/difficult trail and spent extra time working on areas that I would’ve had no clue about!

Back in 2016, I had dental insurance which was recognized by Dr. Richart. however, I fell into some hardship, and couldn’t afford my premiums through Delta Dental, so I switched providers; when I did that, It was probably one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in life. I am happy to admit that after a seven year hiatus, I have acquired Delta Dental insurance again. So, I visited the dentist I have missed for so long again this past week, and realized that he has gotten even better than before. I so appreciate his genuine and professional skills. He really cares. I am having a broken onlay repaired, and made new again. I am so happy to have this dentist and his staff in my corner again. I immediately felt like a new man leaving their care. I recommend this practice over and over again, should you seek or need all things dental. Quality business!

Dr. Richart has been taking care of my teeth since 2012. No one *loves* the idea of going to the dentist, but with Dr. Richart it’s genuinely a pleasant experience. His humor, professionalism, and the warmth of everyone in the office—from the front desk to the dental hygienists—make all the difference. The work speaks for itself. In 14 years, every filling, root canal, and crown has held strong without a single issue. What truly sets his office apart is the one-day crown machine. Being able to have a crown made the same day is a game changer and just one more reason I wouldn’t choose anywhere else.
