About Northtowns Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, PLLC - Tonawanda

Northtowns Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, PLLC - Tonawanda is a dental practice on Young Street in Tonawanda, New York. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less. No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most of the swelling and discomfort settles within about a week, with the first two or three days the most noticeable. Surgical removal of an impacted tooth generally takes longer to recover from than a simple extraction.
How often should I have a dental check-up?
Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease or a history of decay a dentist may suggest coming more often. The point of regular visits is mostly to catch problems while they are still small and cheap to treat.

While having a tooth pulled should be an unpleasant experience, mine could not have gone smoother. This was my second tooth that I needed pulled in 5 years, Dr. Donnarumma is an absolute pro. He had a calming bedside manner before the oral surgery, explained the process, and then was skilled and efficient. The staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend.

I cannot recommend Northtowns Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery more! From the first phone call seeking info, the front desk staff to the back were wonderful. Having high dental anxiety, Dr. Donnarumma and the dental assistants were able to reassure and calm me. I had wisdom teeth removed at 57 and the procedure went quickly and smoothly. I have had nothing more than a bit of tenderness around my jaw. It’s been a very long time since I’ve been to a medical facility where every person you encounter has been pleasant and helpful. Thank you Dr. Donnarumma and staff for running a stellar office, front to back.
