About OPDSF Pediatric Dentistry
OPDSF Pediatric Dentistry is a dental practice on Taraval Street in the West Portal area of San Francisco, California. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.
Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.
Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.
Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.
Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.
Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. My daughter has been going to Dr Pang’s office since she was 2. Now that she’s turned 5, she likes to go in to the patient room by herself lol! Angie gave her a cleaning this time, and Lucy really enjoyed her humor and instructional tips. I spoke to Dr Pang and was really touched by her empathy towards children. We go into OPDSF every 3 months, to keep Lucy comfortable with the dental process and help her develop skills like talking to the staff, asking questions, and becoming aware/ responsible for her health.
My almost 3 year old loved her first visit! Everyone was so nice & helpful, from Bell at the front desk, to Serena the dental assistant, and Dr Chen. My daughter got a little toy when she arrived and a balloon when she left - she's over the moon. I also got some really good advice on how to approach teeth brushing, flossing, and getting rid of the pacifier. I strongly recommend OPDSF, they made what could have been a scary appointment fun for everyone. Highly recommend
The attention to detail and care is second to none. Dr. Pang and the collective team at OPDSF are at the top of their field. My daughters have cognitive disabilities, and OPDSF have attended to their dental needs with care and professionalism. Our family is just grateful for their efforts.
I have 2 little ones, came for appt for older one, and we needed to bring the baby with us.. Staff were very attentive. They gave me a heads up when running late, brought out crayons and toys to help with the wait. These little things they did were all unexpected but their kindness was greatly appreciated. during the actual visit, my older one felt very at ease because at every step, staff helped to calm him down by talking to him about the different tools to help him understand what they're going to do
Fantastic! Everyone was so kind and really oriented towards making it a fun experience for a child. They made my son comfortable right out of the gate. It was an easy experience. Highly recommend!!!
Has a habit of overcharging by adding on charges and also unnecessary visits. We initially needed her to do some cavity and tooth removal requiring a hospital's OR. After the procedure, I was informed that she needed to do an additional $600 of work. Further, her dentists advised that my son come back for cleanings every 2-3 months, which weren't covered by insurance. They also advised us to go to her husband who handles the orthodontic side for X-rays. My son is autistic and was showing anxiety over the x-rays. This frustrated him and he proceeded to yell at my son. His techs apologized for his behavior. He later came back better composed. The last incident, they prescribed some work and said I'd only have to pay $X. It came back that the insurance company only paid half of what was expected which required me to pay more. His new dentist and my dentist, who teaches, said that frequency of visits is completely unnecessary.
This place is amazing! Very tailored for kids and their parents. Big shout out to Angie and Dr. Todd for making things simple and comfortable. I look forward to bringing my son back and for bringing my other two little ones
Today was my little one's first visit to the dentist, and we couldn't have had a better experience at OPDSF Pediatric Dentistry. Arriving quite early, the reception team kindly recommended a fantastic nearby spot for coffee, turning our early start into a delightful morning. This place is truly a hidden gem! Alex, our dentist, took the time to explain and show my 16-month-old son all the instruments and procedures beforehand. This thoughtful approach made the entire process stress-free and fun for him. Alex and his assistant, a wonderful dental student whose name I unfortunately didn't catch, were brilliant and kind. They even gave my son a balloon, cheering him on for his bravery and good behavior, which made him feel comfortable and made the visit enjoyable. At the end of the appointment, my son received a certificate to join a cavity-free team, which we absolutely loved! Ashley sweetly helped us join the team, explaining everything in detail. Thank you so much for making our day today! Every single detail mattered, and this team executed everything brilliantly, from the front desk to post-appointment care. I highly recommend OPDSF Pediatric Dentistry to everyone!
I took my child to OPDSF and had a great experience. They staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The set up is great for children. Mei was the assistant that helped my child and she is wonderful at her job. They make it a fun experience for the kids with a prize at the end of the visit and if your child has no cavities, they are entered into a monthly drawing where they can win a game or toy. Dr. Chen was extremely kind and you can tell she really enjoys what she does. They all made my child and me feel comfortable and welcomed. If you are looking for a pediatric dentist, this is the place to come to. My child is already asking when is her next visit.
