About Oral & Facial Surgery of Oklahoma: Dr. Craig Wooten

Oral & Facial Surgery of Oklahoma: Dr. Craig Wooten provides dental care on North Meridian Avenue in the Northwest Oklahoma City area of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Wisdom teeth are removed when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front, since they arrive last and often into a jaw with no room left. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out — one that erupts cleanly and can be kept clean is often left alone.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent. No. Wisdom teeth that come through cleanly, in a good position, and can be kept clean are often left alone. Removal is generally advised when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the tooth in front.
Why do wisdom teeth cause problems?
They arrive last, often into a jaw with no room left, so they become impacted or come through at an angle. Partly erupted wisdom teeth are also very difficult to clean, which is why they are prone to repeated infection and decay.
What happens during a routine dental examination?
The dentist checks the teeth for decay, examines the gums, looks at any existing fillings and crowns, and screens the soft tissues. X-rays are taken when there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth.

Dr. Wooten is simply amazing! His staff is excellent and very professional. Great atmosphere and personable. I have had quite a few dental implants and tooth extractions performed by Dr. Wooten over the past 8-10 years and he has done an awesome job. Can't say enough great things about his care and professionalism!

After going back and forth for months with another dentist who had billed themselves as an oral surgeon, and couldn’t get the procedure because he couldn’t start an IV, Dr. Wooten came to our rescue. Although I’m a big baby and very scared about dental procedures, this guy is the real deal. Couldn’t be more grateful for his calm demeanor, his extensive experience, he just has the kind of confidence and kindness that the best surgeons always have. Day 2 after getting 3 wisdom teeth out, it is not a fun recovery at all but I couldn’t recommend this practice any more. My ONLY complaint is that I have religious trauma, and it made me very anxious and uncomfortable listening to worship music in the lobby. I realize that a lot of people feel that is a comfort, but there are a LOT of people that feel the way I do, and that might be something to take into consideration to make all patients feel at ease. Classical, instrumental type stations can be a great middle ground.

Dr.Wooten was amazing with me today. i had a consult for devastating pain that had been brushed off by a seperate dentist and 2 emergency rooms. he met with me during consult and explained the actual problem to where I could understand it. He then went out of his way to make sure I was able to be get my procedure the same day and relieved me of SO much pain. Himself and his entire team were so caring and truly saved my sanity today. Thank you all so much.
