About Palmetto Smiles Family, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry

Drive out West Montague Avenue from the Rivers Avenue end and the older North Charleston streetscape gives way quickly to the airport approach, the Tanger Outlets and the joint base. Number 3188 sits on that stretch, a straightforward turn off I-26 with parking at the door. It is convenient if you work near the airport, the base or the Montague hotel corridor, and a genuine trip if you live on the peninsula or James Island. The doors open at 7:30 in the morning Monday through Thursday, which is arguably the schedule's most useful feature for anyone who would rather be seen before work than surrender half a day to it.

Dr. Julian Campbell's practice pairs everyday family care with implant dentistry and a biological-materials philosophy. The office restores with mercury-free, biocompatible materials and follows a safe amalgam removal protocol: isolation and high-volume suction to limit vapour exposure while an old silver filling is sectioned out. Implant planning is done on three-dimensional imaging rather than flat radiographs, which is what lets bone height, sinus position and nerve location be measured before a fixture goes in rather than discovered afterwards. The same scans support jaw joint and TMJ assessment.

Cosmetic dentistry here is the practical sort. Whitening, composite bonding, veneers and staged smile makeovers are offered, and Invisalign clear aligners give adults a route to correcting crowding or spacing without fixed brackets. Aligners move teeth through a series of trays changed every week or two; they handle mild to moderate cases well and severe skeletal discrepancies poorly, which is worth establishing at the consultation rather than three months in. Custom oral appliances for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are also made.

Same-day emergency slots are kept back for toothaches, fractured teeth, lost fillings and dental trauma. Spanish is spoken in the office, which is not universal across the Charleston metro and matters if you would rather discuss a treatment plan in your first language. The practice is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and Delta Dental Premier and offers CareCredit and Cherry for financing longer courses of work. Sedation is available for patients whose anxiety, not their teeth, is the real obstacle.

A North Charleston family practice near the airport corridor combining general and implant dentistry with a biocompatible, mercury-free materials approach and safe amalgam removal. Three-dimensional imaging supports implant and TMJ planning, Invisalign and cosmetic work are offered alongside routine care, Spanish is spoken, and same-day emergency appointments are held back for pain and trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is safe amalgam removal, and do I need my old fillings replaced?
Safe removal protocols section an old silver filling out under isolation with high-volume suction, limiting the mercury vapour released while it is cut. This practice restores mercury-free and follows that protocol. Whether you need existing amalgams replaced is a separate question. A sound, sealed filling is not automatically a problem, and every replacement removes more tooth. Removal makes clearest sense when a filling is fractured, leaking or failing underneath.
Can I be seen before work?
Yes. The West Montague Avenue office opens at 7:30 in the morning Monday through Thursday, closing at 4:30 on Monday and Wednesday and at 2:30 on Tuesday and Thursday. Early slots are the first to go, so ask for one when you book rather than hoping for a short-notice opening. Same-day emergency appointments are held for toothaches, broken teeth, lost fillings and trauma, and are worth calling about first thing.
Is Invisalign right for me, or do I need braces?
Clear aligners handle mild to moderate crowding, spacing and minor bite correction well, using a sequence of trays changed every week or two. Being removable is both their advantage and their weakness: results depend on wearing them close to twenty-two hours a day. Severe rotations, large bite discrepancies and skeletal problems are still better served by fixed brackets or a specialist referral. Scans at a consultation will place you in one category or the other.

I was always reluctant to go to the dentist. Always anticipating the worst experience ever. Dr Campbell is the only dentist I 've had to address my anxieties with understanding, empathy and ways to relieve my anxieties. He's so personable, kind and knowledgeable. I would never go to another dentist. He is top shelf! And not just him,but his entire staff are amazing! Shout-out to my hygienist, Crystal! She's a gem! Going to the dentist can be, daunting, scary, painful, but necessary. Having a team like this can make it a lot better!

This was my first time here and I was so nervous. My anxiety was on high but everyone was so nice and made me feel comfortable. I was able to feel relaxed and not so nervous. They explained everything to me where I can understand. My teeth wasn’t even as bad as I thought. I’m happy I chose this dentist.☺️

They were incredibly kind and really accommodating, especially if you’re someone who gets nervous about the dentist. The ladies at the front desk are amazing! Their smiles and friendliness instantly put me at ease. The dentist himself is super personable and funny, but still takes the time to explain everything clearly. I honestly can’t recommend this office enough!

From the moment I walked through the door until the moment I left the chair, I felt completely comfortable and confident in this dental office. The entire staff was warm, welcoming, and professional. My dental technician, Crystal, was absolutely amazing. She took the time to explain everything to me clearly and in great detail, which made the entire experience feel reassuring and positive. She helped me understand what was going on and gave me confidence that the issues I’ve been dealing with can be resolved with proper care. When Dr. C came in, he also spent a generous amount of time walking me through a clear plan for improving my oral health. I truly appreciated the effort he put into making sure I understood each step of the process and what to expect moving forward. This was honestly the first time in my life that I did not feel anxious or afraid while visiting a medical office. I’m very grateful for the kindness, patience, and professionalism shown by everyone there. I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for compassionate and thorough dental care.

We were explicitly told this office accepted our insurance. Based on that representation, we proceeded with treatment. When it came time to pay, we were charged $1,200 out of pocket for deep cleanings for both my husband and me. We were led to believe the high cost was simply because the procedures were “deep cleanings,” and when we questioned why our insurance was not significantly reducing the balance, we were told that insurance companies “don’t always cover the full amount.” That explanation was misleading. We later learned the office does not accept our insurance at all — which directly contradicts what we were told before treatment. In other words, we made a financial decision based on inaccurate information provided by their staff. When we confronted the office, the response was that the employee who gave us this information “no longer works here.” That does not resolve the issue. Staff turnover does not absolve a business of responsibility for misinformation given to patients. We were told someone would follow up to address and correct the situation. No one ever did. No resolution. No accountability. This experience demonstrates a serious lack of transparency in billing practices. Patients deserve clear, honest communication about insurance and costs before agreeing to treatment — not after being charged. The only positive aspect of our visit was our dental hygienist, Sam, who was professional, kind, and excellent at her job. She is the sole reason this review is not zero stars.
