About Peninsula Cosmetic & Family Dentistry
At the downtown end of Savannah Highway, where US 17 comes off the Ashley River bridges and West Ashley properly begins, number 538 puts this practice within a few minutes of the peninsula and none of the peninsula's parking problems. Several other dental offices are strung further out along the same highway, so check the street number before you drive. Hours run Monday through Thursday, eight to five, with the office closed between one and two, a genuinely closed lunch hour rather than a skeleton staff, which is worth knowing if you are calling about a broken tooth at quarter past one.
The practice organises itself around patients who have been avoiding dentistry. Its own line is that dentistry should inspire hope rather than fear, and the clinical setup follows from it: sedation for people whose anxiety is the actual barrier, and CEREC same-day crowns so a fractured tooth is restored in one sitting instead of two weeks in a temporary. Four dentists, Drs. James B. Wisner, Luke E. Severance, Matthew Thomas and Gaines W. Hammond III, share the schedule, which generally means shorter waits for an opening than a single-doctor office can offer.
Tooth replacement is the deepest part of the menu. Bridges, conventional dentures, dental implants and implant-supported dentures are all offered, along with the oral surgery that often precedes them. The distinction between the last two matters and is rarely explained well. A standard lower plate has nothing holding it but the ridge and gum underneath, so it travels while you chew; the implant-supported version clips onto two or more fixtures anchored in bone and stays where it is put. It costs considerably more, and it needs enough bone height to place the implants, which is why imaging and a frank conversation come before any figure is quoted.
Cosmetic work is deliberately restrained, professional whitening and Invisalign clear aligners rather than wholesale porcelain. Worth knowing before you start: whitening does not lighten existing crowns, bridges or bonded fillings, so front restorations often need replacing afterwards to match the new shade. Preventive cleanings and examinations anchor the routine book, families are seen across all ages, and custom appliances for snoring and sleep apnea are made for patients who cannot tolerate a CPAP mask. The office states it is accepting new patients.
A four-dentist West Ashley practice at the downtown end of Savannah Highway, organised around patients who have been avoiding treatment, with sedation options and CEREC same-day crowns. Tooth replacement is the core strength, from bridges and dentures through implants and implant-supported dentures, alongside preventive family care, whitening, Invisalign and oral appliances for snoring and sleep apnea.

Been going herefor 4 years. Great practice. Nice facilities. Quick easy check in. Plenty of reminders to make your appointment. Hygienist was great with careful cleaning. Dentist was quick and to the point. Easy check out. Only critique is that I'd prefer seeing the same Hygienist and dentist each time or to be made aware or asked if it's ok to see a different dentist. A relationship with your healthcare team is important. It's hard to establish that if the team you see changes often.
Fantastic experience, as always. I have full confidence in the entire team and would recommend this practice to anyone.
I’m so glad I picked Peninsula as my new dentist! I have bad medical anxiety but the whole staff was so kind and understanding, they really make you feel comfortable. Luke Severance was truly awesome, and so was Casey, who did my cleaning. Liz is actually the best and she really made me feel a lot better about being there. After just one visit, I feel so much more at ease going to the dentist. I can’t say I’m looking forward to the next visit, but thanks to the staff, I’m no longer dreading it. I cannot give them high enough praise, thank you guys so much!!!
I’m so happy I was referred to Peninsula Cosmetic & Family Dentistry by a friend. We had to change all of our Dr’s since we live here full time now. The minute I met Megan the Dental Hygienist I knew I was in good hands. She explained everything to me and showed me my X-rays, and I knew there were some issues. I felt very confident with Dr. Severance and his examination. I have veneers and many crowns, so I have invested in my teeth and would like to continue to for them to be in good hands.
Dr. Severance and his staff are wonderful. Everyone is friendly, professional, and makes you feel comfortable from the moment you arrive. Dr. Severance always takes the time to answer questions and explain things clearly, and I never feel rushed during my appointments. I get a bit anxious in the dental chair, but they always know how to put me at ease! It's obvious that the entire team truly cares about their patients.
We love Peninsula Dentistry! They were very very patient and worked with my son after he had a horrible day experience elsewhere. Now he has absolutely no worries about going to the dentist. They are very personable and friendly while being very professional. They do a great job and don’t try to talk you into anything you don’t need but offer the latest technology and painless dentistry. We actually don’t mind going to the dentist. The office is clean and plenty of parking is available. We wouldn’t go anywhere else and actually go there despite living in Mt Pleasant.
This office is professional, knowledgeable and overall outstanding. I had been dealing with a complications from a filling (with a different office/dentist) I was in pain for weeks. A friend recommended Peninsula Cosmetic Dentistry and I couldn’t be happier. For the first time in almost two months my jaw is pain free! If you’re looking for a trustworthy dentist who is an expert in their field look no further!
