Risto E. Hurme, D.D.S.

Dr. Hurme is the best in the nation. I fly from Iowa to San Antonio Texas because he is the only one I trust. When I started with him in 2019, I looked like a refugee from a concentration camp. Now, in 2025, I have energy, I look younger, I’m not in pain, my eye isn’t twitching, I am happy, and I am grateful I found Dr. Hurme.

My experience with Dr Hurme has been amazing. Every body is different and thus will have different experiences, but mine has been phenomenal. When I came I had constant jaw-clicking, jaw pain, headaches, ringing ears, dizziness, shoulder pain. With the help of his appliances and constant care, it has been almost completely eliminated. He does not accept insurance, but my dental insurance doesn’t cover TMJ anyways, and I don’t care. It has been absolutely worth it.

I have been seeing Dr. Hurme for 10 years now and I was at wits end when I found him. I came to him with an array of debilitating symptoms and I was seeking a non-invasive approach to treating my TMJ. I had gone through many doctors, specialists, hospitalizations, all without any explanation to the "episodes" I was having that led me to being pulled out of school and unable to drive. I tried the traditional route of going through my dentist and getting orthotics, but that was unsuccessful for me and made my symptoms worse. When I began, my quality of life was lacking significantly and my symptoms were out of control. I had extensive jaw locking preventing me from eating a regular diet, headaches, tremors, sleep apnea, constant pain, and a laundry list more. Dr. Hurme utilizes teaching throughout treatment to ensure you understand what the goal is, and what changes are happening and why. Treatment has consisted of a variety of customized mouth pieces that get adjusted from time to time. Dr. Hurme's holistic approach over the years has allowed me to complete schooling, reengage in sports, eat a normal diet, and come off my cpap, all with scans and documentation to support my progress along the way. While I am not a doctor, it is clear at a first look that my scans over the years demonstrate significant changes in my bone structure, and an airway that has more than doubled in size (supported by numeric values on a 3d scan). It has been reassuring and exciting to monitor both the objective and subjective progress along the way. I now see him just for maintenance adjustments when my TMJ flares up, but overall my quality of life has been night and day since beginning my journey with him. I would highly recommend him!

We took my 12 year daughter to see Dr Hurme upon recommendation of her orthodontist. My daughter had been complaining of ear pain and our great ENT doctor could not find any problem. Dr Hulme was able to identify that problem was associated to TMJ disorder. He put her under treatment with day and night retainers that are adjusted every month. The pain went away in the fist couple of months. She also had a gag reflex that made a dentist imposible to do cleaning or x-ray. After a couple of months of using Dr Hurme's treatment, the gag reflex went away. WE still don't know the final results as my daughter hasn't finished her treatment, but so far we are very happy. In the waiting room I've met people that come from out of town that were referred by their doctors to travel to San Antonio to see Dr Hurme. I guess that speaks very highly of Dr Hurme.

I recommend ignoring the negative comments posted by some people and seeing Dr. Hurme (and his pleasant staff) for yourself. I made an appointment out of desperation after suffering from tremendous migraines that affected my graduate studies and work. I started noticing the difference in my jaw after my first visit and also armed with more knowledge on my condition. Now after a couple of years my migraines and jaw pain have been greatly reduced. I can even see a change in my jaw line and posture as well. I used to have a constant tension in my shoulders that is now gone! I am now more aware on how my jaw and tongue can affect my entire body and how a misalignment in one part can affect many other parts of the body. Dr. Hurme's services definitely helped me recognize and address my TMJ issues. I definitely recommend him!
