About River City Pediatric Dentistry

River City Pediatric Dentistry operates on Old Saint Augustine Road in the Sunbeam area of Jacksonville, Florida. Pediatric dental care is built around treating children specifically — dentists with additional training in child development and behaviour management, and offices designed to make a first visit unintimidating. Guidance generally points to a child's first dental visit around age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Dental anxiety is common, and most practices are used to working with nervous patients — through clear explanations of what is about to happen, a slower pace where needed, and sedation options for patients who want them. Avoiding the dentist out of anxiety tends to make eventual treatment more involved, not less.

Children benefit from starting dental visits early, generally by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming through, mainly so they become familiar with the setting before any treatment is actually needed. Establishing that routine early tends to make ongoing checkups far less stressful for both child and parent.

Payment and insurance arrangements vary by practice and by treatment, so it is worth asking directly what is covered and what options exist for anything that is not, rather than assuming either way. Getting that clarified before treatment starts avoids surprises once it is underway.

Beyond any single treatment, most dental visits start with an examination — checking for decay, reviewing the gums, and looking at existing fillings or crowns — often alongside X-rays where there is a reason to look between or beneath teeth. That groundwork is what a dentist uses to explain any findings and set out next steps before you leave.

Routine attendance, roughly every six months for most people, is what actually keeps small problems small. A lot of decay and gum disease develops without any pain in its early stages, which is why regular checkups matter even when nothing seems to be wrong, rather than only booking an appointment once something hurts. Frequently Asked Questions

What services does River City Pediatric Dentistry offer?

Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Modern digital X-rays use a very low dose and are taken only when there is a clinical reason. They show decay between teeth and problems with developing adult teeth that cannot be seen by looking.
When do children start losing baby teeth?
Usually from around age six, continuing until roughly age twelve, though the timing varies widely between children. Adult molars also come through at the back around age six without any baby tooth falling out first.
How can I look after my teeth between appointments?
Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth daily covers most of it. Limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount consumed.

Took my son for his first cleaning and he was complaining of pain in his tooth. From start to finish was exceptional everyone was so kind and the atmosphere is so fun for kiddos he loved to be able to watch a disney movie while getting his cleaning. Dr. Kelly was so nice and took the time to explain everything while also making my child feel comforfable.they laid out a plan that was precise and detailed. I cannot recommend this office enough! Definitely found our dentist office for future visits.

My 2 year old had her second dentist appointment with River City today and it was just as quick, painless, and efficient as her first visit with them. They are very gentle, patient, and thorough. 10/10 recommend for your littles!

Simple, easy and full of warmth. That's what you get at this amazing dental office. After coming from another dentist where we didn't have the greatest experience to RCPD, as been night and day. Every single person we came across was amazing, like amazing! From the front desk ray of sunshine, the soft spoken cheerleader of a dental assistant, and to the warmest dentist who carefully explained every step so as not to startle. So glad we found this pediatric dentist!

Highly recommend coming here! My son had an abscess and his dentist wouldn’t see him for 2 weeks, couldn’t even squeeze him in for emergency check. With River City we got an appt the next day. The staff is impeccable. Everyone was kind and friendly. Felt no harsh judgement like from other dentists. My son had a tooth removed today and he was so nervous (so I was I, he usually cries and struggles) it went so smoothly, he did not fight at all and he said it didn’t hurt! They also drained his abscess. Whole thing took 10 minutes. I’m so surprised how easy it was and how quick the doctor is, she is great! My husband and I are so happy, we will be switching our dentist to Dr. Downs.
