About San Diego Dental Implants & Periodontics

San Diego Dental Implants & Periodontics is a dental practice on Moraga Avenue in the Clairemont area of San Diego, California. Periodontics is the specialty focused on the gums and the bone supporting the teeth, handling more advanced gum disease, related surgical treatment, and — in many practices — dental implant placement, which sits naturally alongside that training.

A first appointment at a new practice typically covers a full examination, a review of your dental and medical history, and a professional cleaning, with X-rays if you do not have recent ones. It is also a reasonable time to raise any longer-term concerns, cosmetic or otherwise, so they can be factored into a plan going forward.

Day-to-day oral health still comes down to the basics between visits — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, and limiting how often sugary food and drink appear through the day matters more than the total amount eaten at once. Regular professional care is what catches whatever those habits do not.

Digital X-rays are a routine part of dental care because they show what a visual exam alone cannot — decay forming between teeth, bone loss below the gumline, and how developing adult teeth are positioned in children. They use a low radiation dose and are taken on a schedule matched to individual risk rather than at every single visit.

Left untreated, small dental problems tend not to stay small. A minor cavity that would have been a straightforward filling can progress to needing root canal treatment and a crown, and early gum inflammation that would have reversed with a good cleaning can progress toward bone loss around the teeth. Catching things early is generally the difference in both effort and cost.

Continuity matters in dental care — seeing the same practice over time means your history, X-rays, and any patterns in your oral health are already on file, rather than starting from scratch at each visit. That familiarity is part of what a regular dental home offers beyond any single appointment. What is gum recession and can it be treated?
Recession is when gum tissue pulls back and exposes more of the tooth root, often from aggressive brushing, gum disease, or grinding. Grafting procedures can cover exposed roots, though how well that works depends on the extent of the recession.
Can a periodontist save a loose tooth?
Sometimes. If the looseness comes from bone loss around the tooth, deep cleaning and periodontal treatment can stabilise it, though the outcome depends on how much support has already been lost.
Is it normal for teeth to be sensitive to cold?
Mild, brief sensitivity is common and often relates to exposed root surfaces or worn enamel. Sensitivity that lingers after the cold is removed is more significant and worth having examined, as it can indicate the nerve is involved.

I am very thankful that I found Dr. Jay Akef. I had my first consultation regarding my upper cracked teeth (#2 and #3), for which my previous dentist had recommended a bridge. Dr. Akef carefully evaluated my situation and explained that tooth #2 had a cavity, which had not been identified by my previous dentist. Dr. Akef presented two options—either a bridge or an implant—and thoroughly explained each process. Dr. Akef is very patient and took the time to answer all of my questions. During my first appointment, I had many questions for both Dr. Akef and Janet, and they were incredibly patient and helpful in addressing my concerns. I ultimately chose to proceed with a zirconia implant. I feel confident that this dental office will provide my long-term dental care. Dr. Akef is an honest and caring professional. During a second appointment yesterday to address my dental concerns, I asked about gum inflammation in my upper teeth and cavities in my lower teeth, which my previous dentist had said required urgent gum treatment. After reviewing my X-rays and examining my teeth, Dr. Akef advised that no treatment was necessary at this time for either issue. He recommended simply monitoring the situation and using Parodontax mouthwash to help heal the mild inflammation in my upper teeth. He also reassured me that my lower teeth did not have cavities, just normal surface wear from daily use. This honest and conservative approach relieved a great deal of stress and worry about potentially losing my teeth. Dr. Akef’s integrity and kindness makes every visit comfortable and stress-free. I am truly impressed and very grateful. After having numerous unsatisfactory experiences at other dental offices, I searched extensively for a trustworthy dentist and finally found Dr. Akef. While the internet can be helpful for research, not all information is reliable, so finding a provider I can trust means a lot. I drive about 70 miles—typically one to two hours, depending on traffic—to get to the dental office, and it is absolutely worth it. I highly recommend Dr. Jay Akef to anyone looking for a new dentist. I have had two appointments so far and am extremely satisfied with the care and recommendations I’ve received. I look forward to my upcoming appointments for my upper zirconia implants. Finally, I have found a dentist I have 100% confidence in! Trianna

I was at Dr. Akef for a tooth implant consultation from a VA referral, the short period I was there, Dr. Akef and his staff made me at ease, the doctor made sure to explain the implant procedure. Hoping to them soon once the request is approved from the VA.

I went through two bridges in the last 33 years, and my back teeth were weakened and couldn’t support a bridge any longer. I was prepped for two implants yesterday. Even though the bone grafting procedure was very uncomfortable and lengthy (scraping gums and drilling into my jaw bone yikes!!!) , I felt I was in very capable hands. Dr.Jay is very experienced and soothing. Today I’m very swollen and can’t eat solids well, but I have very little pain. I’ve taken my pain meds and use an ice pack. Dr. Jay and his entire staff were amazing. I highly recommend this office and feel confident that my implants will be worth it.

To start off with, the place was easy to get to. Good directions. Georgette, Jenna, and the entire staff were very professional, and easy to talk to. Dr. Akef especially is a True Professional. Also, he is a credit to his profession. When I came to see Dr. Akef I had a serious infection that was abscessed and causing me great pain. Dr. Akef and his staff healed the infection and made sure that I was Comfortable throughout the procedure. I had 2 teeth that needed to be extracted and the infection cured. Not only did they do an outstanding job, but they also made sure to explain the procedure as they were doing it. It was a Privilege and an Honor to have Dr. Akef and his staff take care of me. I would strongly recommend Dr. Akef and his staff of true professionals any day of the week. And twice on Sunday.

My first appointment with paperwork and lots of great x-rays and a check up, next week a thorough cleaning. Such a professional and friendly office atmosphere… Dr. Akif is a no nonsense and very fair Dentist. I was not "upsold" for unnecessary procedures, just the promise of keeping an eye on one little troublesome area. Highly recommend!
